⚡Was recently recruited for a public art campaign @wipa_worksinprogress in which I was asked to visually respond to a series of political topics - AI responsibility was my topic of choice.

This whole somewhat mysterious initiative (unknown funder) was led to me by @space538 - and I'm so honored to be one of amongst 28 artists who responded to this current call for action.

SPACE has been selected as one of four founding WIPA "hubs" to commission art, in exchange with Public Media Institute in Chicago, BULK space in Detroit, and Confluence Studio in Minneapolis. This means that our collective works will be wheat pasted and/or publicly displayed in each of these cities during our fantastic upcoming election season. WOW!

I also love that local printers are being commissioned to reproduce the graphics, meaning that my friends at @pickwickindependentpress are handling the riso-ifying of the images in Portland and my homies in Chicago are handling the reproductions there. PRINT FTW!

❗You know what? We need help circulating the posters in Southern Maine. Would you be interested in obtaining a series of prints for public display? Learn more via the SPACE Call To Action link in my bio 🔝

a two part post so that we can tag all of the wonderful creatives in this story- a (different kind of) RISO history. As told from the perspective of Hallagans, a Chicago based RISO dealer who has been lucky enough to have a front row seat to the rise of risography and a creative movement that continues to grow

Clay Hickson – Illustration for New York Times’ crossword
Drive carefully

A recent cryptic crossword in The New York Times featured clues built around copy for a misleading ad describing a clapped-out old jalopy. Clay illustrated that same vehicle, with a little help from art director and illustrator Vinnie Neuberg. There was also help from a Times Games columnist providing answers to clues like ‘… and how do we add that it was just struck by lightning?’ – answer: ‘new shocks’ and ‘… and that the tailpipe is dragging on the ground?’ – answer: ‘low emissions’.

Clay Hickson – Illustration for New York Magazine

Feast your eyes

Clay illustrated a guide by Tammie Teclemariam in New York Magazine looking at the best local ‘tiny-but-mighty’ food joints in the city, both long-established and new. As you may be able to tell, Clay loves drawing food.

Leo season is for the ones who walk into a room and the energy shifts. Who love loudly, dress boldly, and have never once dimmed themselves for anyone else’s comfort.🦁

Sun-ruled and completely unapologetic about it.

Clay Hickson – Illustration for The New York Times

Decline of an empire

Mary Beard, with John Guida, recently contributed an opinion piece to The New York Times where she looks at the grand arches, gladiatorial contests and egotism of Trump and can’t help but be reminded of Ancient Rome. Clay’s accompanying illustration literally reflects on this comparison, using a certain recently notorious Washington DC pool to do so.
