This Saturday 10/17! at @clayspace_bk! 6-9pm! We’ll go through some useful stretches and spend time evaluating our throwing techniques against the bad attitudes of our various joints… that’s one way to put it, anyway… I love teaching body movement for specialized activities, and this is no different. 🌟Past participants have said that they can now center more clay and throw bigger pieces. And that their wrists don’t hurt any more! Anyone with some wheel experience is welcome, and we will be building skills all night long. 🗣️Please encourage any clay friends you know to come on by for this highly functional and fun workshop! Link is in the usual spot 🔗🔗 #BodyMechanicsOnTheWheel #CeramicsTechniques #PotteryTechniques

Autumn leaves are changing, and nature is setting the color palette. 🍂✨ Inspired by the season, these hand-sculpted clay leaves pair rich teal with warm metallic gold—a little piece of fall, KLAY NYC style. 🍃🍂

Do you know how to find the leverage you need to center larger amounts of clay? I recommend connecting your elbows to your legs or torso and start there!

Want more in-depth instruction? Come to Body Mechanics on the Wheel on Saturday 10/17 at @clayspace_bk, 6-9pm! Registration is open, so if you want to throw bigger than ever before, now’s your chance! PS This workshop can go on the road so if you’d like to host me at your studio, send me a DM! #WheelThrowing #BodyMechanicsOnTheWhe

Studio visit earlier this summer (07/25) with Kemi @kemischle and Christian @sistertomato former PC Fellows! Kemi was a part of our 2024 cohort and Christian was a fellow in 2021! Since their respective fellowships, they’ve started careers as full time ceramic artists and educators while using their shared studio to produce beautiful bodies of work. Their shared studio is filled with Kemi’s large carved vessels that come from memories of home throughout her life, and Christian’s expressive sculptures focused on his experiences as a native New Yorker. They share this studio space with three other ceramic artists and one furry friend, where everyone runs the kilns and maintains the space. Christian and Kemi use their shared studio as a base while teaching ceramics across the city, and both are currently teaching at Gasworks. During this visit current fellows were able to ask Christian and Kemi about their artistic practices and what it’s like working full time as Black Ceramicists in the city. As former fellows, Kemi and Christian were able to share their career experiences after finishing their summer with Public Ceramics and how they go about their studio practice! ✰ Special thanks to our wonderful Public Ceramics Community and partner studios @gasworksnyc , @clayspace_bk , and @uptownclay !

A selection of new sculptures from Hope Deferred for @artandnewport on view now till next year @normanbirdsanctuary At the time, I could have not anticipated how important the material could become. Now, I feel the clay and the ceramic process are a poetic pen for transcribing the unknown anxieties of our current existence. Moreover the glazing process is like painting in the dark reiterating this unknown future potential. The relinquishing of responsibility in a way allows for a different sense of freedom, a new kind of approach to abstracting form and narrative. The Birds have always been a metaphor for aspects of the self or the human condition. They still exist as that here, but amassed their meanings can change. In this context the uniqueness of each individual sculpture is highlighted while simultaneously elevating it’s counterparts. For this exhibition they will occupy the same table, same space, same life, exist as a group and almost relinquishing their responsibility as an individual. Through this togetherness and focus on the unknown I am hoping to take a closer look at the kindness of living. I think more than ever joy and togetherness are needed in a world that has grown so fractured and grim. I hope the joy of making this work, this show can be seen and felt. Maybe inspire some happiness or a momentary reprieve from the anxieties of life. But I am equally aware that this is a tall order, a little bit of wonder is just as welcome.
