This is our second year being part of @lumafestival , and this time we were lucky enough to “adopt” a whole building for ourselves. 😆

It’s always inspiring to be surrounded by so many talented artists and to see Binghamton filled with two sleepless nights of amazing light art.

Like our convention recaps, here are a few things that stood out to us:

1. Most light art festivals are in Europe, so having one in the States that we can actually drive to is pretty amazing!

2. Projection mapping is a big part of LUMA, but there are also tons of “Small Works” scattered around town. Small in name, but definitely not in creativity or scale. Some of them were especially inspiring because of how creatively they worked with the city itself.

3. A lot of people recognized us because of our Space Rabbit hats and came over to say hi and give us compliments. 🥹 It’s honestly so touching to know people like our work and our little Space Rabbit.

4. Projects this big always come with unexpected problems. We were working until the last minute before the festival started, and honestly had no idea if everything would work until we saw it with the audience. Then people started cheering… and somehow both of our eyes got wet at the same time. 🥹

5. LUMA gives local artists and communities a chance to try projection mapping, even if they don’t have much experience. We think that’s amazing, especially because we actually started there too!

Thank you again for having us, now it’s time to think about our next project!

The safest thing a performer does? The thing they've done 10,000 times.

The circus industry knows something counterintuitive about the body: a performer with a masterful trapeze act at 25 can keep doing it until 55 with no issues.

The risk shows up when something changes. Add a double flip instead of a single, and suddenly the launch, the catch, and the landing are all new, and every new part is an opportunity to fail. Master what you repeat, and respect what you change.

Finally back and settled…ish from Learning Man. Still have a few more things to post, but first: my latest episode of the @the_remarkable_podcast is live, and it’s with my dear friend Dalton (@clearhumaneyes).

I met Dalton at my first Burning Man several years ago. My camp job (Gallery) was guarding the fire spinning platform for a few hours, and I ended up with a front row seat to one of the most present performers I have ever seen. A couple nights later I found him again and told him we were going to be friends and that he didn’t really have a choice.

It’s been great getting to see him around the community in Austin over the last few years. He was one of the first guests I wanted on the podcast, and I’m glad I did it, because once I heard his full story I realized there are so many levels to this human.

He was on track to be a physicist. Then he picked up a levi wand at a festival and knew his life was about to change. He walked away from the PhD, toured the country out of his car, and went completely broke. The same day his bank account hit zero, Cirque du Soleil emailed him with a full time offer.

Sometimes you follow the nudge and the universe catches you.

Now he runs his own company, choreographs and programs his own drone shows, builds custom tech, and performs around the world. And he’s stayed one of the most humble, down to earth people I know. That’s the part I admire most. Just a good human.

This is exactly why I started this podcast: to share the stories of people doing it differently.

Bank account: zero. Inbox: Cirque du Soleil.

As much as you want to run on love and appreciation, that doesn't pay the bills. Dalton Sessumes hit a solid zero in his bank account and faced the big "what do I do next" moment every artist dreads.

Then he opened his email and found an invitation from Cirque du Soleil, the leading circus arts company in the world, with massive productions in Las Vegas and touring shows everywhere. The opportunity: a 6-month cruise ship show. Proof that sometimes the breakthrough shows up exactly when you're at the bottom.

He's not building a show. He's building the next circus.

Fire spinning at Burning Man. Drone shows. Performance art. But when asked what he wants to be known for, Dalton Sessumes goes bigger: a hub of creativity, an HQ focused entirely on one field of art, with all the tools and systems in place to push it as far as it can go.

The core of the vision is integration. Merging technology with performance, two vastly different worlds, is where he's found the most success in his life. Now he wants all of it under one roof.

Caught Singularity from @mindworksarts at @lumafestival and still processing…
Is this the endgame of AI, or @museband ‘s prophecy coming alive? （they even lost their user name to another AI - Meta Muse)
Set in a church…is this a new Genesis??
P.S. ChatGPT wrote this.

He choreographs down to the breath. Literally.

Dalton Sessumes plans every single moment: breathe here, so the next 12 measures land exactly on this move, this move, this move. That level of depth in choreography shaped his entire career from the start.

Because at the level of larger productions, you're not just dancing. There are lights, fog, sound, drones, costumes, and programming, and none of it can be improvised. Everything is pre-programmed. When he sends his arm out, everything better react right on time. That's the standard.
