That opening fall felt personal. 💀 Setting the 8b final for the city competition in Germany was an awesome challenge, but testing it myself was a whole different story.

I don't have footage from the actual event, but this is the raw behind-the-scenes reality of a routesetter fighting his own creation. From the timelapse on the lift to the intense testing moves. 🛠️🧗‍♂️

Did I make it too sandbagged, or does it look like a solid 8b?

Let me know below! 👇

Gymbro wants you to do 3 sets of 12 reps on the reverse Pec-Deck for "healthy shoulders." Meanwhile, climbers are out here holding a full-body isometric contraction 8 meters above the deck just to clip a quickdraw. 🤫🧗‍♂️

Let’s break down the actual biomechanics of this specific climbing position (the classic "opposing press" or "compression into a reverse grip"):

🧠 THE PHYSIO BREAKDOWN:
When you are pressing outward on two vertical holds at the same height using a reverse (backhand) grip, you aren’t just pulling—your upper body is essentially screaming in an intense isometric chain:

1️⃣ Rotator Cuff Stability: The Infraspinatus and Teres Minor are working at 100% capacity to externally rotate the shoulder joint, keeping the humeral head securely inside the socket under massive outward force. This prevents internal rotation collapse (Impingement syndrome).

2️⃣ Scapular Anchoring: Your Smarter Muscles (like the Serratus Anterior) are firing like crazy to glue your shoulder blades flat against your rib cage, preventing "winging scapula." Simultaneously, the lower Trapezius suppresses the shoulders down away from your ears to maintain a stable base.

3️⃣ The Kinetic Chain: To let go with one hand and clip the rope, the remaining shoulder has to instantly double its workload, while your core and Gluteus Maximus transfer all that lateral force down into your toes on the wall.

So yes, gym machines are great for isolation... but climbing is the ultimate, real-world, high-stakes shoulder stabilizer test. 🏋️‍♂️❌ 🧗‍♂️✅

How do you train your scapular stability? Gym machines or just fighting for your life on the wall? Let me know below! 👇

When a routesetter climbs their own route during testing, what style of ascent is it actually?

Obviously not OS (On-Sight)—after all, they held the holds in their hands, mounted them on the wall, and knew the sequence of moves.

So maybe a Flash? Although even with a flash, a climber shouldn't have touched the holds like that beforehand. On the other hand, they haven't seen anyone else climb it, and the concept doesn't always work 100%!

That leaves PP (Pinkpoint/Redpoint), but that's a bit harsh, don't you think?

Not that it makes much sense to stress about the style of ascent on an artificial wall... but it's still an interesting topic.

What do you think?

The Dolomites are famous for perfect limestone, but the old-school hard lines in the Capanna Bill sector can have a very specific character... 🛠️🇮🇹

1️⃣ Photo: Matching with both hands on a artificial hold.
2️⃣ Photo: One step further – one hand on the plastic, the other buried inside a chipped pocket.

Modern route developers would probably shake their heads at this kind of "tuning." But even with these retro features, it turns out to be an incredibly interesting, 40-meter-long endurance line. An 8b that tests absolutely everything. Do you guys like these crazy old-school classics? 🎯🧗‍♂️
