SOULS FOR SALE. ACT NOW. THEY’RE GOING “FAUST”.

At The Ungovernables we read Even Though I Knew The End by C. L. Polk. Our discussion piqued my interest as to where the concept of “soul selling” came from. Offering Jesus the kingdoms of the world, Satan says: “All this I will give you, if you will bow down and worship me”. Jesus refuses. (Matthew 4:8–9).

Inspiring the legend of Faust is the apocryphal story of Theophilus of Adana who lived in Byzantium in the 6th century. Theophilus, or Ted as I call him, is a venerated saint. Ted’s contract was returned to him. Ted’s soul emerged unscathed. The contract did not.

Famously, Christopher Marlowe’s The Tragical History of the Life and Death of Doctor Faustus was performed in 1594.

Stephen Vincent Benét’s 1936 short story is about farmer Jabez Stone who sells his soul to the devil aka Mr. Scratch. Jabez is ultimately defended by Daniel Webster in front of a jury of the damned. If you’re looking for parallels to Even Though I Knew the End, this is the story to read – and it has a twist!

A note on the soundtrack: Me and the Devil Blues is by Robert Johnson (1911-1938). His recording career lasted 7 months owing to his death at age 27. He was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 1986.

I hope you enjoy my reel.

🍷🐉 Some oaths are magic. Some are just a way to never get hurt again.

@clpolk pulled up to Sistah Scifi Wine Down Wednesday to talk about The Feywild Job, the Dungeons & Dragons romantasy from Random House Worlds.

🗝️ Saeldian is a con artist whose power comes from a pact to never fall in love. That works fine until a patron hires Saeldian to steal a gem called the Kiss of Enduring Love. The catch? Kell, the bard Saeldian betrayed with a kiss almost ten years ago, is on the crew.

🌌 D&D has always been collective imagination, a world people build together around a table. Listening to C.L. Polk talk through this heist, we kept thinking about how much bigger those worlds get when our storytellers are the ones holding the map.

Check out these great Historical Mystery reads. All of these mysteries have historical settings, from the distant past of the Victorian and Regency eras to before, during and post WWI and WWII and many other times in the past. They vary in where they take place: from England and Europe, all other the United States and India and beyond. Additionally, some are retellings of classics with a mysterious twists or features famous historical figures taking on the roles of sleuths. I've enjoyed all of these book and can only hope you'll find a new favorite read! Also includes BIPOC and 2SLGBTQIA+ recommendations. Good morning from the bookshop!

We’re excited to talk about books with you, but until we can do it in person, we thought we’d start the conversation here. Today, we’re celebrating a classic vegetarian cookbook, revisiting a tale of magic and matchmaking, commemorating the first adventure of a marmalade-loving bear, and spotlighting a jazz biography and a pianist’s memoir on the birthday of Toledo’s piano legend.

The Old Dublin Bookshop is an independent, family-owned bookstore at 38 S. High St. in Historic Dublin, Ohio. Opening day is getting closer, but you can shop with us right now at olddublinbooks.com.

Tatum named Waller as his biggest influence, so this was the teacher bowing to the student.

The quote became the title of “God Is in the House,” an album of informal recordings made in Harlem clubs in 1940 and 1941. It won Tatum a posthumous Grammy for Best Jazz Performance by a Soloist.

Mollie Katzen turns 76 today. Happy birthday, Mollie!

She grew up in Rochester, New York, studied oboe and piano at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a degree in painting from the San Francisco Art Institute. She brought those skills to the “Moosewood Cookbook,” which she hand-lettered and illustrated herself.

From 1995 to 2000 @molliekatzenartstudio hosted “Mollie Katzen’s Cooking Show” on PBS, and in 2017 the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History collected her papers.

This review comes from Bookslut, a literary blog Jessa Crispin started in 2002, when she was 22 and living in Texas. It ran for 14 years and published its final issue in May 2016.

Moosewood Restaurant opened on January 3, 1973, and it is still serving at 215 N. Cayuga St. in Ithaca. In 2000 it won a James Beard America’s Classics award.

If you like the “Moosewood Cookbook, try Katzen’s “The Enchanted Broccoli Forest” (1982) or “The Heart of the Plate” (2013), which she considers her best work. The Moosewood Collective has published its own cookbooks too, including “Sundays at Moosewood Restaurant.”

What’s one thing that you love about yourself?

It’s National Coming Out Day!
From @natdaycal “Each year on October 11, National Coming Out Day encourages civil awareness recognizing and supporting those in the LGBTQ community. The day celebrates individuals who publicly identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender – coming out regarding their sexual orientation and/or gender identity being akin to a cultural rite of passage for LGBT people.

#NationalComingOutDay

One in two Americans knows someone who is gay or lesbian. The ratio applied to transgender Americans is one in ten. As more of the LGBTQ community come out, those who know them are more likely to become more educated. They also become more supportive and understanding, too.”

These are a few books that I have read and loved! Different expressions of what it means to be and show love ❤️

We missed silent book club the other night because we went to an important documentary screening so we had our own cute little reading date and dinner afterwards.
I finished this one and I really enjoyed it.
