On Indigenous Peoples’ Day, honoring ancestors means protecting their resting places.

We honor the Nacotchtank, also known as the Anacostan, and the Indigenous peoples whose connections to this region long predate today’s streets, property lines, and park boundaries.

Indigenous remains have been documented on land administered by Rock Creek Park. At Lyons Mill Road, beside Georgetown’s historic Black cemeteries, questions remain about potential burials. We still have not received the archaeological report, and we do not know who may be buried there or whether any burials are Indigenous.

That uncertainty is a reason for protection and transparency.

The fencing DDOT installed to close this area was recently ripped apart. Videos of the encounter have received approximately 170k views and are posted on our IG.

Now we need that attention to become action.

BGF’s three emails requesting Council oversight, along with follow-up calls, have gone unanswered.

Release the archaeological reports. Explain the findings. Establish a coordinated plan to protect the people buried here.

We do not need to know someone’s name before respecting their burial.

Please share and ask DC Council members to respond to Black Georgetown Foundation’s requests for burial protection.

Standing with volunteers as we ended our workshop we notice people ignoring the road closed signs. The entitlement is disgusting...

@ddotdc this isn't working! We need protection.
