Our office’s annual Senior Luncheon celebrating older adults in our community is one of my very favorite events. This year, we honored our incredible Bed Stuy neighbor and perpetual volunteer Yvonne Cummings, who has dedicated her entire life to public service and giving back to our community, and @rep_velazquez, who has been a mentor and inspiration to me and so many in our community.

Thank you to the more than 270 older adults and nearly 30 neighborhood volunteers who joined us for lunch, music, and dancing in @brooklynbridgepark! And thank you to @catholiccharitiesbq for partnering on the event, the fantastic @brooklynconservatory band, and @nycaging for joining us!

Today I introduced the Stop Super Speeders Bill. Stop Super Speeders is about reining in the worst of the worst repeat offenders: drivers who, by racking up 16 or more speed camera violations in 12 months, have proven they cannot be trusted to drive responsibly. This bill will prevent unnecessary deaths by slowing these super speeders down. We are grateful for the leadership of Senator Gounardes and Assembly Member Gallagher, for leading this effort at the state level. It’s time for the city to finish the job. Swipe to learn more about the bill.

Slowing down super speeders saves lives. Senator Gounardes and I fought for years to pass our bill at the state level to do just that, and now Councilmember Santosuosso is taking it across the final hurdle at the city.

Super speeders — people who are caught blowing past the speed limit 16 times or more in a school zone in one year — are not your average drivers. They are twice as likely to cause a crash that results in serious injury or death, and they are undeterred by tickets or threats. This legislation isn’t about punishment, it’s about slowing down these deadly drivers and protecting communities.

We are fighting for every family that’s lost a loved one to a preventable crash. For Niyell, for Sammy, for Natasha, Diana, and Deborah. No more.

Yesterday at the Hearing every EMS union, association, and faction said the same thing: the solution to this crisis is fair pay for FDNY EMS.

To which the city responded:

"When the demand for emergency medical services exceeds the availability of in-service ambulances, the Fire Department’s Bureau of Emergency Medical Services (FDNY-EMS) triages emergency medical calls in order to dispatch ambulances to the most critical medical emergencies. As a result, there can be a queue of emergency medical runs awaiting dispatch for when an ambulance becomes available. This bill would require that New York City Emergency Management (NYCEM) issue emergency notifications each time FDNY-EMS has more than 25 pending ambulance dispatches at any given time. Such notification would include information on non-emergency room resources for medical care and consideration of when individuals should seek alternative means of transportation to an emergency room."

The concert on the deck of the Titanic continues.

I was honored to host about 30 Israeli youth ambassadors, ages 17 to 18, and welcome them to meet with members of the NYC Council Jewish Caucus. They shared what everyday life in Israel looks like and the hopes and dreams of Israeli young people, perspectives you rarely find in news reports. Thank you to our guests for their time and openness.

The conversation about specialized high school admissions has been going on for decades. We know the disparities, we know the barriers, and we have proposals to address them. What we need is the political will to act.

I joined Council Member Lincoln Restler on NY1’s Inside City Hall to discuss our proposal to expand access to specialized high schools while maintaining academic excellence. Our plan calls for expanding seats, strengthening advanced coursework and test preparation, and adopting a broader approach to admissions. I’ve also introduced a resolution calling on New York State to repeal the Hecht-Calandra Act, which limits the City’s ability to reform admissions at three specialized high schools.

Talented students across all five boroughs deserve access to the preparation, resources and opportunities that can put these schools within reach. It’s time to address the barriers and turn years of debate into meaningful action.

On Thursday, I joined @ny4childcare, @speakermenin, @councilmemberkayla, @cmchiosse, and many other esteemed colleagues fighting for all-day, all-year childcare. Childcare that ends at 2pm is not universal.

I am proud to serve as Chair of the first-ever Subcommittee on Early Childhood Education, to fight for truly Universal Childcare for all New Yorkers. It takes all of us working together.

Long before there were condos in Dumbo, there were lines out the door at Patsy and Carol Grimaldi’s pizzeria.

I was proud to co-name Old Fulton Street after Patsy and Carol Grimaldi, who took NYC pizza to new heights and treated all their customers like family.
