I’ve officially had a chocolate pizza, and I’ll never be the same. 🥲 This week on Cultivate, I sat down with Ryan Novak, owner of Chocolate Pizza Company (@chocolatepizzacompany) in Marcellus, NY. Ryan started washing dishes at the shop when he was 15 and bought the business at 21, while finishing his senior year at Syracuse with $1,200 in his bank account. Sixteen years later, Chocolate Pizza Company ships all over the world. When they were featured on ABC World News Tonight, they got 1,000 orders in the first 10 minutes. We talked about what it really took to get there: the morning his cocoa contract got canceled, the expensive mistakes that taught him to focus, learning to let great people be great, and why the character of a founder shapes the brand they build. And yes, I tried the famous peanut butter wings on camera. 🙃 Ryan’s new book, Inner Armor: Why Passion, Resilience, and Character Shape Entrepreneurs and the Brands They Lead, is out now on Amazon and chocolatepizza.com. 🎧 Listen to the full episode at the link in my bio. Thank you to our presenting sponsor, Mooney Marketing Group (@mooneymarketinggroup), for making this conversation happen.

Need to get this off my chest… This happened to me recently, and I haven’t been able to stop thinking about it. Probably because it’s not the first time it’s happened. I think we need to talk about what’s appropriate and what’s not appropriate when attending networking events. I am ALL for shooting your shot. Truly. Ask for the meeting. Send the DM. Pitch yourself. Put yourself in the room. But please understand that access to someone does not automatically equal access to everything they’ve built. I did not spend years pouring my time, talent, money, relationships, and energy into building a platform just for someone to walk into an event I’m hosting, meet me for the first time, and immediately ask how they can benefit from it. At least take me to dinner first. 😂 Because when your first interaction with someone is essentially, “Hi, nice to meet you. Here’s what I want from you,” it doesn’t feel like networking. It feels transactional. It feels extractive. And frankly, it makes me feel like you don’t actually care who I am. You care about what I can give you. Especially when I’m the one who built the room you’re standing in. Please just give me a minute. Get to know me. Have a conversation with me. Ask me what I’m working on. Tell me what you’re building. Find some common ground. Maybe even consider what you could bring to the relationship before asking what you can take from it. And then? Shoot your shot. Some of the greatest opportunities of my career have come from relationships that started with absolutely no agenda. Networking is not about collecting people who can do something for you. It’s about building actual relationships with people. There’s a difference.

This week’s episode features Jennifer Wilber and Marissa Rothschild, the women behind @crazyrealbuggezogg Not every conversation has to be about business, growth, or the next big thing. We talk about what gave them the courage to just go for it, what they hope to build with CrazyReal, the stories they want to tell, and plenty of things we definitely did not plan to talk about. This one is fun, honest, and a little different from our usual episodes. 🎧 Listen to the conversation now by clicking the link in bio!

Slow and steady wins the race 🐢 ✨ I used to think entrepreneurship was about asking, “How much can I build?” How much can I launch? How much can I grow? How many ideas can I turn into something real? This year has taught me to ask a different question: What do I actually want to build? Because building more isn’t always the same as building better. Sometimes the most entrepreneurial thing you can do is make it smaller. Get clearer. Let go of what isn’t working. Protect your energy. And put more of yourself behind the things you actually believe in. I’m talking about this and a lot more in this week’s solo episode of Cultivate.
