This past summer my 80 year old French grandmother asked to join my trip to Italy.

It was a no-brainer. I’d be upgraded from hostels to Airbnb’s, she’d insist on paying for dinner after her second glass of wine, and I’d get to watch the miracle of an elderly 4 foot 10 woman with feet bunions climb the stairs of the Vatican.

When we arrived, Nanou casually mentioned her side of the family was actually 100% Italian.
Her grandparents had moved to France and changed their last name to Idlas. My middle name. Because it was “Saldi,” the Italian word for strength, spelled backwards.

I thought that was pretty electric.

But, a few days later, I started noticing “Saldi” everywhere. Every store. Every window.

I tried to press Nanou on it, but she was too busy posting Google Maps screenshots of our current location on Instagram. She was insistent that Google Maps screenshots was what her audience desired. I told her she could just post actual photos of Rome. She was unsure. This fight went on for 6 days.

Anyway, eventually I asked a group of tourists wearing jeans so tight they could only be British why Saldi was in every store window.

The skinny-jeaned chavs confirmed it.
“Saldi” didn’t mean strength.
It meant on-sale.

As I sat on the horrifying realization that my name more or less translated to Henry Temu Standage, I wondered why my family hadn’t gone with something a bit more aspirational. Like Sterling. Or Cashmere.

But walking around Rome with Nanou and her now flaming red bunions, I began to find the total lack of thought behind choosing a new permanent last name refreshing.

My great, great grandparents just wanted to say the opposite of on-sale.

and sometimes the easiest way to do that

is just to spell that shit backwards
