“I advise you to do good to young people, as they have a tender heart that is keen to learn.”

I’m grateful to the S.T.A.N.D. (Stepping Towards A New Destiny) Program for inviting me back to speak. The work they’re doing across Baltimore and Howard County—especially with young men navigating or transitioning from the Department of Juvenile Services is nothing short of transformative.

After our session, some of the young men asked candidates running for County Executive about their plans for funding and community investment. One question stood out to me:
“Do you believe there is such a thing as a bad kid?”
That one stayed with me.

We are all shaped by our environment, but sometimes, all it takes is one person or one experience to shift a perspective—offering just enough hope for someone to keep going or see their circumstances in a different light.

You never truly know the impact you can have on someone’s life.

Coach Duncan and the S.T.A.N.D. life coaches are doing powerful work—teaching financial literacy, creating opportunities for travel and exposure, and creating space for conversations around mental health and growth.

Programs like S.T.A.N.D. are essential, and when properly supported, they can help more young men avoid ever standing in front of a judge and reduce the burdens that often follow.

Programs such as S.T.A.N.D. could have changed the trajectory of some of my own childhood friends—keeping them from incarceration and the paths they went down..

Outside of nightlife and the shit that doesnt matter…I really stumbled into something that I didn’t know I would find such refuge in. From students and YN’s to my lil brothers and son son’s this summer was much more meaningful than I could have ever scripted. Its weird now because i have way less patience for adults. It was low before but seeing what some of my sons’ put up with on a daily and just watching them try…ima let yall tend to the bullshit yall scared to fix, ima work on this garden over here. 🪴
