How the Hawaiʻi Filmmakers Collective got started, from one of the people who started it.

Kainoa Rudolfo (@coachkainoa) on why he and a few friends stopped waiting for someone to hand them experience and built a group that makes each other's films. If you're trying to get your first credits here, @hifilmmakers is worth knowing.

Their 72 Hour Film Challenge showcase is this Sunday, September 27, 5:00 to 7:00 pm at the Doris Duke Theatre. Brian is one of this year's judges. Tickets are through the Honolulu Museum of Art and the night tends to sell out.

Our new episode with Kainoa is out now on YouTube, Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Link in the comments.

Mahalo to our sponsors at @vntg_inc, who furnish our set. Show them some love and check out their cafe @cafevntg and their glass company @glzrinc.

On this date in 1931, a night in Honolulu set in motion events that would change the lives of five young men and their families.

The five were accused and brought to trial. The jury reached no verdict. Before a second trial could take place, Joseph “Kalani” Kahahawai was abducted and killed on January 8, 1932.

We share this history with care for Kalani, for the other four men, and for the families who have carried its weight. Ala Moana Boys tells part of the story from the perspective of the five accused men. Today, we remember Kalani as a person, not just a name in a case.
