Today’s Happy Place adventure… coffee tasting ☕️

We took a little behind-the-scenes tour at Swell Joe and got to see how they roast their beans, learn way more about coffee than we knew this morning 😂 and, most importantly, taste some options for The Happy Place.

And I think we found our coffee!

Their Mojo blend is sooo good and we’re pretty sure it’s going to make mornings at The Happy Place even happier.

These are the little details that are making this all start to feel very real. ✨

The stories we hear about this place…

Yesterday our Verizon installer told us this was once “the worst place he’d ever seen in the entire Sussex County.” And we’ve heard so many versions of that story—from locals who watched the motel’s demise, constables, firefighters who were here the morning of the fire, and paramedics who remember some of their worst calls happening right here.

In a way, we believe the fire cleansed this property, so we’re not totally upset about it. Fire destroys, but it also clears. It makes room for something new to grow from the ashes.We can see the hidden blessings.

We pray over this place continuously. We feel so connected to the land and the old trees here. With every little thing we do, it feels a little bit lighter and more alive... Like it’s healing right along with us as we bring it back to life.

We cannot WAIT for new friends, families and guests to come fill this place with good energy and new stories.

A little note from Athena…

We found these canna lilies and elephant ears on super sale at Bella Terra, our favorite landscaping spot, and couldn’t pass them up. It’s honestly a little premature to be landscaping 😂 but the weather is starting to cool down and we needed to get these babies out of the wagon in our front yard and into the ground.

So I sat out here with them for a little while and asked where they wanted to be.

My creative vision for this place is still shapeshifting literally day to day, but I could clearly see these surrounding the fire pit area… so here we are.

David digging holes and me saying “a little more to the left.” 😂

We chose to call it The Happy Place at Sunset because that’s exactly how we feel every time we’re here.

It’s quiet. The sunsets are incredible. Love Creek is just down the block. You can hear the birds instead of traffic, and life just feels a little slower.

That’s what made us fall in love with this place.

We can’t wait to see families loading up kayaks, kids catching their first fish, friends hanging around the fire pit, and people remembering what it feels like to spend a whole day outside.

We’ve got something really exciting coming in the next few days…

We’ve been out here all day soaking it all in, and it finally feels like things are starting to move.

In just the last couple of weeks we’ve opened up space for the future food truck lane, cleared trees for our solar panels, put up our very first Trade Screen Time for Creek Time sign, and said goodbye to that old broken sidewalk that’s been here forever.

Looking around today, we both had one of those moments where we could actually picture families here.

Kids running around the lawn. People hanging out by the fire pit. Someone loading a kayak onto their car after a morning on Love Creek.

It’s still a construction site… but it’s starting to feel like our Happy Place.

Thanks for following along with us. We seriously can’t wait to open these gates and share it with all of you.

One of the coolest parts of this whole journey has been hearing everyone’s stories.

The firefighters, contractors, and neighbors who’ve grown up around here all seem to have a memory of the old Love Creek Motel. They’ve told us about fishermen pulling in with their boats, early mornings on the creek, and what a fun little spot this used to be.

The more we heard, the more we knew… we didn’t want to replace it. We wanted to bring that feeling back.

So yes, there will be colorful rooms, fire pits, and fun surprises—but you’ll also find kayaks, canoes, fishing gear, and every excuse to trade screen time for creek time.

Here’s to bringing a little life back to this quiet corner of Love Creek. We can’t wait to share it with you.

There were moments when walking away would have made more sense.

A vacant motel.
Squatters.
Police calls.
Court hearings.
A devastating fire.
Fallen trees.
Endless permits.
Setbacks that seemed to appear the moment we solved the last one.

But that’s not how this story started.

When we bought this little motel, we thought we were signing up for some tree cleanup, fresh walls, new flooring, and a whole lot of elbow grease. We even bought 7 of the 9 rooms sight unseen. 😅

We had absolutely no idea what was waiting for us.

There have definitely been moments where we’ve looked at each other and said, “What did we get ourselves into?” 😂 But every setback has only made us more determined to bring this place back to life.

We’re so excited to finally start sharing the transformation with all of you. From the construction to the design to all the little details that are turning this forgotten motel into The Happy Place at Sunset.

Thanks for being here, for cheering us on, and for believing in this crazy dream. We can’t wait to show you what’s next.
