As the country’s first all-electric healthcare campus, @ucihealth - Irvine sets a new design standard for the typology.

The design-build team of @henselphelps and @coarchitects drew on @ucihealth’s mission—“Discover, Teach, Heal”—to guide the design of the new two-building UCI Health-Irvine (UCIH-I) facility for the University of California, Irvine.

The project team created collaborative care environments that connect patient, student, and staff areas to campus open spaces. The building’s siting takes advantage of views toward the San Joaquin Marsh Reserve wildlife sanctuary, strengthening the connection to the surrounding natural landscape. Each patient room has a marsh view, leveraging the documented benefits of biophilic healing.

Landmarks is pleased to announce “Floating Landscape,” a major new commission by Maya Lin for The University of Texas at Austin.

The 3,600-square-foot structure marks Lin’s first public artwork in Texas and first commission in the state. Sited on the grounds of the Autry C. Stephens Engineering Discovery Building, a new facility designed by CO Architects for the Cockrell School of Engineering, “Floating Landscape” will create a public commons for gathering, movement, and reflection.

The work will be set within a restored meadow designed by Lin in collaboration with Lionheart Places and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. At night, it will glow with embedded LED lights corresponding to the Texas sky on September 15, 1883, the date of UT Austin’s founding.

Opening April 2027 with a public conversation between Lin and art historian Jana La Brasca. Learn more about the project at LandmarksUT.org.

The @cityofhope Comprehensive Cancer Center, Hope Plaza, received an @aianational Healthcare Design Award!

The AIA Healthcare Design Award recognizes innovative projects that help solve aesthetic, civic, urban and social problems while also being functional and sustainable.

Designed collaboratively by @coarchitects and @ewingcole and located in Duarte, CA, the Hope Plaza outpatient center was created to provide a compassionate, patient-centric approach while delivering comprehensive cancer care.

A flexible, multidisciplinary program equipped with the latest technology is organized to meet patient needs and streamline care delivery, making Hope Plaza a one-stop location for outpatient cancer care and research. The campus now elevates feelings of wonder and joy, promoting holistic healing with stunning mountain views and a carefully curated art collection.

This World Nature Conservation Day, we're recognizing a project that preserves and protects our natural resources and ecosystems.

Designed by @henselphelps + @coarchitects, the @ucihealth - Irvine multi-building healthcare campus is one of the first major hospitals around the world that runs entirely on electricity.

The campus is heated and cooled by the project’s all-electric central utility plant and incorporate multiple energy-efficient strategies, including sunshades that reduce solar gain by up to 85 percent.

High-efficiency glazing features a custom ceramic frit pattern that doubles as a bird-friendly surface, designed in consideration of the adjoining wetland’s avian populations.

To further ensure that the project did not negatively impact the marsh, @coarchitects worked with UCI biologists to position the buildings for minimal environmental impact, install a turtle fence to protect endangered reptiles, treat site runoff, and enhance the local ecosystem with filtered condensate water.
