IF THESE WALLS COULD TALK

Jorge Mejia & The London Symphony Orchestra

I composed If These Walls Could Talk from questions I was trying to answer. Sitting in my studio apartment at 221 Collins, surrounded by walls more than a century old, I would wonder whose lives - and whose loves - had passed through those rooms. Had anyone died there? Had anyone prayed there with the intensity of the condemned? Had anyone loved with the wonder of a new heart opening up?

Those questions became a three-movement piano concerto, which I recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the London Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Ricardo Jaramillo, produced by Julio Reyes Copello, and with me at the piano.

I composed the music first. By the time we made the recording, I was still working on the stories that would accompany each movement. As those stories took shape, they became an integral part of the piece.

The first movement became Irving’s story. He buys the building sight unseen in 1926:

“He bought the building against the advice of his father and with money borrowed from a brother who still wasn’t speaking to him.

Three days later, the storm hit, like a fist from the bottom of the world…”

The second movement is Sofía’s story: a pianist turned nurse who finds love unexpectedly in the halls of 221 Collins:

“Sofía was a pianist before she was a nurse.

But when the war, the big war, took her brothers, it also took the sound from her hands.

She enlisted as a nurse with the Red Cross and found herself in Miami Beach.

She met Danny by accident. Or maybe by rhythm. A cough. A hallway. A sentence spoken, and then an answer, like a chord resolving.”

The third movement is Elena’s story, a former actress now facing her mind slowly fraying around the edges:

“Years ago, Elena had been someone. An actress, a singer. Guest arcs, nightclub sets, a face people recognized. Then… not.

Over time, the edges of things began to blur. Gently, like fabric worn thin by weather…”

Here’s some exciting news! “Secrets of Light” is on the Grammy ballot this year in the Country and American Roots, going for Best Contemporary Folk Album. 💿

7 years in the making, through lockdowns, breakups, moving to 2 different countries, with the invaluable help of my friends and collaborators and my own muses and personal resilience, this is an accomplishment I feel very proud of.

Yes, they’re all breakup songs AND they’re songs that helped me find my way back to myself. To my own voice.

First and foremost, major thanks to bff & co-producer @jordzan who always makes me laugh and encourages me to strive higher in all ways musical and otherwise.

@brendancarthy at @theorchardrecordingstudio in Enniscorthy, Ireland has been an island of creativity and friendship throughout the years.

Gavin Glass at @orphanrecordingstudios in Curracloe, Ireland got it all started when we recorded “Leaves”

Jim Hustwit at @larp_music in London has been like the sun shinning through the clouds. His amazing recording and producing skills have elevated my songs to where they are now.

Thank you to Pierre Duval and his magic on “Tonight” in addition to Igor Bolender who recorded my vocals on Secrets of Light (the song) and composed and played the string arrangements. Both of these songs got loved up down in the catacombs of Paris where Igor’s studio lies.
