Today October 18, 2026 Lufthansa bids farewell to the Airbus A340-600 in its fleet. The final flight, LH419, between Washington Dulles (IAD) departs at 5:55pm local time and is expected to touch down in Frankfurt some 8 hours later at 7:55am local time.

Entering the Lufthansa fleet in November 2003, the A340-600 provided the airline with a true four class cabin aircraft. 24 aircraft were delivered between November 2003 to May 2009 and today after 23 years, the last one retires from the airline.

The A340-600 once held the title for the longest aircraft until the Boeing 747-8 entered service. From hot and high airports in central and South America, to high capacity and premium markets such as New York, Los Angeles, and Hong Kong, the A340-600 provided reliable service for its over two decades of service.

Growing up in Southern California, I’d visit LAX often on the weekends da to do plane spotting and the A340-600 was always a favorite of mine. Both retiring in 2020 during the pandemic, Iberia and Virgin Atlantic flew their A340-600s to LAX which brought some nice variety for many years!

Today’s flight, LH419, with service from Washington Dulles International airport to Frankfurt Airport is scheduled to be operated by D-AIHW, a 17 year old airframe delivered on December 23rd, 2008.

Seattle’s 1200 Stewart project, now known as Aero1200, is a massive mixed-use development in the Denny Triangle featuring two 48-story towers, but its defining centerpiece is a retired Boeing 747-400 suspended between the buildings inside a glass-covered public galleria.

The aircraft is the former United Airlines N178UA, a 747-422 delivered in November 1990 that flew until 2017 before being retired to the aircraft boneyard at Victorville, California.

Rather than scrap the historic jet, the developers dismantled its fuselage into dozens of sections and transported it to Seattle, where it has been reconstructed roughly 14 feet above the pedestrian walkway as both monumental public art and usable interior space.

The aircraft is largely stripped to its raw aluminum skin, with its cockpit, nose, landing gear and tail retained while the wings are shortened to accommodate the architecture; the concept deliberately celebrates Seattle’s connection to Boeing and the 747 “Queen of the Skies,” which was built in nearby Everett for more than half a century.

Engineers also had to integrate the enormous airframe into the buildings structurally, reinforcing the installation to control movement, vibration and seismic loads.

More than a decorative airplane, the 747 transforms Aero1200’s central galleria into an aviation landmark, giving a former airliner a remarkable second life while physically embedding one of Boeing’s most recognizable aircraft into the architecture of the city where the Boeing story began. - #aero1200 #1200stewartprojectseattle #b747 #seattle #b747lovers
