REVIEW 👁️ The Bluest Eye x Toni Morrison

forgive me for not posting my reviews for a while, although i enjoyed thinking deeply about this book. some quotes are below—

»What made people look at them and say, "Awwwww," but not for me?
•
»Misery colored by the greens and blues in my mother's voice took all of the grief out of the words and left me with a conviction that pain was not only endurable, it was sweet.
•
»The dandelions at the base of the telephone pole. Why, she wonders, do people call them weeds? She thought they were pretty. But grown-ups say, "Miss Dunion keeps her yard so nice. Not a dandelion anywhere."
•
»Thrown, in this way, into the binding conviction that only a miracle could relieve her, she would never know her beauty. She would see only what there was to see: the eyes of other people.
•
»It was their contempt for their own blackness that gave the first insult its teeth.
•
»The end of the world lay in their eyes, and the beginning, and all the waste in between.
•
»Black people were not allowed in the park, and so it filled our dreams.
•
»But to find out the truth about how dreams die, one should never take the word of the dreamer.
•
»She was still no more than a girl, and still waiting for that plateau of happiness, that hand of a precious Lord, who, when her way grew drear, would always linger near.
•
»I hurt just like them white women. Just 'cause I wasn't hooping and hollering before didn't mean I wasn't feeling pain.
•
»It was as though his disdain of human contact had converted itself into a craving for things humans had touched. The residue of the human spirit smeared on inanimate objects was all he could withstand of humanity.
•
»And I believe our sorrow was the more intense because nobody else seemed to share it.
