Matt Domanski , Island Lake Lodge, Fernie, BC 1996

One of my favourite captured cover shots & memories from the ’90s.

Matt Domanski spots his landing after sending this massive road gap while Mark Gallup @markgallup in the frame is behind the camera. Down below, Steve Winter @mspfilms and the MSP ski crew watch it all unfold.

Colin Blake, Matt Domanski @matt_domanski , Dave Stirling @dstirlingjr and I made the long drive from Whistler to experience cat boarding at the incredible Island Lake Lodge. None of us expected to be teamed up with Steve Winter and his crew, Seth Morrison @mrsethmorrison , Dean Conway, and Kent Kreitler. The lodge figured it made sense to put the pro snowboarders and skiers together for the week.

That led to plenty of good natured banter as we all tried to outdo one another. I had to tell the cat driver he should probably stop and let the skiers out because it was getting steep. I was genuinely worried for them.

Then the snow came.

Nearly 80 cm (over 30 inches) of dry smoky powder , it was like dollar bills were falling from the sky while we were there. It wasn’t the kind of snow you rode on yet it was the kind you disappeared into. Every landing felt like you were snorkeling through powder, fighting your way back to the surface before taking your next turn.

Island Lake was unlike anything I’d ever experienced.

I’ve always had tremendous respect for Steve Winter and his lifelong pursuit of ski filmmaking. Sharing that week with him and the MSP crew was something I’ll never forget.

But between us… I still think the snowboarders stole the show.

So, this is Level 4.0! They say age is just a number, and I couldn’t agree more. This past year, I’ve been on a mission to limit less— the only boundaries I face are the ones I set myself. Instead of a mid-life crisis, I’ve had a full-on rejuvenation. Fitter, healthier, happier, and more in love than ever before. From shark dives to scuba trips, becoming a celebrant (by the power of Google) and epic adventures across the globe with my favorite person, it’s been one hell of a year.

Today was supposed to be the final piece of the puzzle: my first marathon to kick off this new chapter. I trained hard for 14 weeks, embracing early mornings, pounding the pavement in the darkness with long runs, and the thrill (and fear) of tackling 42km. But then, last week during my taper, a sharp pain in my knee decided otherwise. Just like that, my marathon plans were out. It felt like everything I’d worked for had slipped away… until I realized the real victory wasn’t the race—it was the journey.

Over the past few months, I pushed my long runs each week a little further - from 10km, up to 30km, each feeling like a personal best and discovering a whole new side of myself. The reality sets in today that like life, sometimes the path doesn’t go as planned, and that’s something I need to learn to be okay with.

It was a humbling moment and a reminder that running—and life—has a way of leveling you out. I’d been so focused on hitting that distance for my birthday that this setback felt like a blow. But I’ve realized it wasn’t for nothing. When we fixate on the destination, we miss the growth in the journey.

This milestone may not have happened today, but it’s still waiting for me in a few months. Because I’m the one writing my story, and the only limits are the ones I allow.

So here’s to 40 being about leveling up, not slowing down, and a photo dump of some cool shit from the past year that reminds me how far I’ve come (and what lays ahead). Cheers for the bday wishes, feeling very overwhelmed by the love shown and everyone’s messages. Here’s to the next chapter! #BetterAt40 🖤

What a difference a year makes!

One year ago today, I made the decision to pivot my career, leaving my entrepreneurial past to challenge myself by working with, for, and against some of the greatest marketing minds and global brands.

Now, a year later, I had the pleasure of helping host, curate, and MC the Discovery Stage for the inaugural @sxswsydney. 4 days, 35 sessions, and 100 speakers!

It was an absolute pleasure to bring to the stage for INVNT® an incredible innovation packed program featuring creatives and trailblazers from a diverse range of categories; challenging the status quo in AI, Art, Music, Creativity, Design, Travel, Fashion, Sustainability, Gamification, Fandom, Fin-Tech, Space, Science, Robotics, Web3 and more.

There were so many highlights in the four-day schedule including guest appearances from Tom Nash, Karl Kruszelnicki, Adam Spencer, Lee Constable, Dr Michelle Dickinson, Prof. Genevieve Bell, Neil Perry, Miguel Maestre, the Hon Ed Husik MP, Karen Ferry, Justin Drape, thought-provoking panels, our rising generation of Start-Ups, experimental performances, morning mindfulness sessions, even a robot dog called 'Quake' and so much more to help unleash your creative & mental potential at SXSW.

What was even better was sharing the stage with some of my best friends of over 20-yrs @richypenny & @marylouryan.

My gratitude to all our guests for being so open-minded about our craziness and believing in the vision to bring something so unique to Sydney for the first time!

A massive thank you to the @sxswsydney family for this opportunity (we hope we did you proud), and to our incredible team at @invnt for your tireless work and support to make this moment so special.

Lastly, I want to thank @colinburlingblake for taking a chance on this young upstart, lifting me up from the weeds, and being a constant champion and supporter always.

As the saying goes, "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take." So if you're going to have a swing, you may as well do it wildly..
