Dubai is known for its glass high-rise (and is sometimes also criticised for lacking culture).

During a recent stop there – my first time in over 20 years – I was keen to see what else it had to offer beyond its towering buildings and mammoth shopping malls.

And I ended up discovering several art gems! Pictured here:

1-2. Murals in the old Al Fahidi Historic Neighbourhood (which I highly recommend walking around). First one is by @all.defs.

3-5. XVA Gallery (@xvagallery) , a quirky hole-in-the-wall gallery and café in Al Fahidi. Such a great little find!

6-7. Collective X (@collectivexdxb), a group of multidisciplinary artists-in-residence in a villa in Al Fahidi, where various works are displayed.

8-12. Gallery27 (@gallery27dubai), at Dubai Marina, a really funky gallery exhibiting international pop art in a semi-industrial space.

13-17. Public art at Dubai Marina. If you take a stroll around the Marina, you'll be able to enjoy a number of sculptures and murals created as part of the @artemaar initiative.

You can read more about all of these on my blog. And the best bit is that they're all free. I definitely recommend all of them if you're looking to explore a slightly different side of Dubai.

When your art practice seeps into the kitchen…
My background as a fashion designer nudges me to match things like my coffee cup to my shirt, my outfit to my artwork… the circle is now full with the snacks for our open studio tonight at @collectivexdxb matching my artwork

the colorings are all natural (beets, spices, teas…) so these focaccias taste as good as they look 👀

Trevor Waugh: The UAE Chapter

Art has no boundaries - not even geographical ones.

Spotted for his unique talent, @trevor_waugh tells us how Fate brought him all the way from UK to the UAE.

That was more than 30 years back!

Since then this internationally renowned Fine Artist has been closely associated with Dubai’s premier art hubs - @majlisgallery as well as @collectivexdxb located within the iconic Bastakiya, Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood.

Trevor fondly recalls sleeping under the wind tower of the Majlis Gallery in the early days while sharing exhibitions with other artists, part of the New Orientalists, who arrived in the UAE to document the exotic sights of this amazing country.

Thank you ‪Trevor. 🙏🌹Along with documenting your inspiring story for @celebrate_silver I have thoroughly enjoyed editing it myself as well!

You can know more about Trevor and his artwork, which can be found in many private and royal collections around the world, at https://trevorwaugh.com/

High time for a studio refresh! My art practice had been feeling a bit sluggish these past couple months.
Even though I know it’s all part of the process that akward phase between two bodies of work always feels never ending… then one day, without warning, the pieces start falling into place 🧩
