A home office that was designed to do so much more.

When we started planning this space, we knew it needed to feel distinctly personal. A place to work, create, and be surrounded by the things our client loves. But it also needed to be incredibly functional, with the flexibility to become a guest bedroom whenever needed.

And that’s where the fun began.

What looks like beautiful built-in cabinetry and quartz countertops is actually a fully movable system. Every section is on wheels and can be rolled out of the room without disassembling a thing.

The wood-paneled feature wall was another favorite challenge. We designed a concealed metal backing with magnetic shelves that can be repositioned, removed, or added depending on what he needs. Beautiful, functional, and completely adaptable.

We incorporated a standing desk and comfortable seating suited to his height, a custom closet for additional storage, and a Frame TV with recessed electrical to keep every cord out of sight.

And then came the personal details.

Sports have always been a huge part of his life. We curated custom artwork celebrating the teams and places that mean something to him, alongside a collection of his favorite music and records, including a @crosleyradio record player they gifted to him. It’s a pretty incredible backdrop for a video meeting, too.

But my favorite part of this project?

His wife and our team pulled off the entire transformation as a surprise while they were traveling. Three weeks from start to finish.

When he walked in, he was speechless.

Those are the moments I love most about what we do.

Because thoughtful design isn’t just about creating beautiful rooms. It’s about understanding the people who live in them and finding ways to make their everyday lives more intentional, functional, and meaningful.

And sometimes, it’s about pulling off a really good surprise.

One of my favorite small spaces at Hancock Street.

Laundry rooms have to work hard, and so much of that functionality is decided long before the pretty finishes go in.

We planned the custom cabinetry around what actually needed to be stored, incorporated open shelving for the things that made sense to keep accessible, and sized the lower openings specifically for baskets that could easily be pulled in and out (without scuffing the paint…IYKYK).

This is where our background in professional organization really changes the way we design a space. We think about what you own, where it needs to live and how you’ll actually use the room before we finalize the cabinetry and layout.

And then we get to make it pretty!

Following up last week’s topic with a slightly different angle: we’re wondering if the thing we’ve gotten really good at might still be something worth questioning.

Canyon Lane, lovingly known around here as our Love Shack.

We bought this 1961 mid-century home in 2025 as an AKP investment property. It had great bones and so many original details worth keeping. It also needed a complete overhaul.

We completely reworked the kitchen to create better flow, more storage and a space that actually worked for gathering. The walnut-style cabinetry, red oak floors and layered mid-century details kept the warmth that made us love the original home.

One of my favorite solutions is downstairs. We removed one coat closet and divided that space between two rooms, giving us a larger shower on one side and a dedicated record-player nook with floating shelves and open storage on the other.

Throughout the home, we kept what was special, reworked what no longer functioned and gave every inch a purpose. We wanted the home to feel unmistakably mid-century, just much more thoughtful in the way it lived.

Canyon Lane gave our team room to push creatively and show what is possible when design, construction and organization are planned together from the beginning.

Canyon Lane our “Love Shack.” 🤎

When I bought this 1961 house in 2025, I knew it was going to be a special and rewarding project for our team. I also knew it would challenge us but I don’t think any of us realized just how much.

This house pushed us to our limits. It asked us to problem-solve, trust one another, take creative risks and keep going when things felt really hard. It stretched us in every possible way and ultimately made us so much better as a team.

To see what many people would simply label “a flip” featured by Houzz makes me incredibly proud.

We never saw Canyon Lane as a quick turnaround or an opportunity to make a quick buck. We approached it as a thoughtful revival of a home that deserved to feel special again. Every material, detail and design decision received the same care and attention we bring to our client-facing design-build remodels.

That intentional, elevated work is what our team is so passionate about and having it recognized in @houzz editorial, “7 Stylish New Kitchens With Wood Cabinets and Details,” feels incredibly meaningful.

I’m so proud of what we created, so grateful I got to design it alongside @shannon_m_nair , and deeply thankful for every person who helped bring our Love Shack back to life.

And @colleenamelia captured it all so beautifully, as always.

To my Kathrine & Kennedy,

This year has been magic.

Kate, you became the teacher. The leader. The one who showed Kennedy how to play, how to laugh, how to be brave. You were her first best friend before she even knew what that meant.

And Kenny, from the very beginning, you watched your big sissy with so much admiration. Every giggle, every dance, every new trick was worth copying. No one could make you smile the way Kate could.

Somewhere between the bath times, stroller rides, shared snacks, bedtime stories, and living room dance parties, you found each other.

God knew you two were meant to be sisters. He knew your hearts needed each other and gave you the gift of growing up side by side.

Being your mommy has been the greatest honor of my life. 💗
