October 11th marks International Coming Out Day, an international date that aims to raise awareness about the importance of coming out of the closet and discussing topics related to LGBTQIA+ people. National Coming Out Day (NCOD) was founded in 1988 by Robert Eichberg, a New Mexico psychologist and founder of the Personal Growth Workshop, and Jean O'Leary, an openly lesbian political leader from Los Angeles who then headed the group defenders of the national rights of gay people. The date of October 11th was chosen in 1987 because it was the anniversary of the National March on Washington for Gay and Lesbian Rights. Initially administered from West Hollywood offices by national gay rights advocates, eighteen states participated in the first NCOD, thus attracting national media coverage. In the second year that NCOD was held the headquarters moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico and participation grew to 21 states. After a media push in 1990, NCOD was marked in all 50 states and seven other countries. Participation continues to grow and in 1990 NCOD merged its efforts with the Human Rights Campaign.

A data de 11 de outubro foi escolhida em 1987 porque era o aniversário da Marcha Nacional de Washington pelos direitos de pessoas Gays e Lésbicas. Administrada Inicialmente a partir dos escritórios de West Hollywood, pessoas defensoras dos direitos nacionais gays, no primeiro NCOD participaram dezoito estados, atraindo deste modo a cobertura dos media nacionais. Today marks my last day as co-host of @comingoutpod-- 5 years, 259 episodes, and a #workwife partnership for the ages... It's absolutely impossible to find the right words to convey what this journey has meant to me; but, in true podcaster fashion, I used my final episode to try! 😂🤷🏻 In today's END OF AN ERA ep (🔗 IN BIO), we take an equally hilarious and tearful stroll down memory lane-- from the original tiny closet that we crammed Stephanie Beatriz into, to our posh podcasting studio, to our respective hot, sweaty closets that we've been recording in since we went virtual. I share what I've learned, what I'm grateful for, and even a few things I wish I'd done differently... We reminisce about some of our favorite moments, and talk about our ONLY fight as #workwives! I sob, and Lauren actually CRIES (marking my greatest accomplishment in the history of the pod). It's a beautiful, funny, and fitting goodbye to a project and a partnership that has changed my life and my heart for the better. Thank you to every one of you who has tuned in these past 5 years-- the sense of community you've provided me has been incredible, and I will be forever grateful for your consistent support and generosity. ❤️❤️❤️ @lauren_flans, I love the motherfucking shit out of you, and I will never stop cursing about it.
