Have you been to Maanggiigaa creek crossing at Maliyangaa Ngurra marshes? Mispronunced and misspelt at Monkeygar creek crossing, this place is a culturally significant place for Wayilwan / Weilwan / Wailwan people. Maanggii are the fresh water mussels and Maanggiigaa in our language means a special place of a big lot of mussels. The breeding cycle of mussels is a very incredible story - we tell the story in our Maangii dance. We are incredibly proud to support @facingthenumbersfilm a vital new documentary that challenges us to look beyond the statistics of First Nations over-representation in Australia’s justice system. At Shark Island Foundation, our mission is to back brave, creative storytelling that drives real social justice. Directors Tyson Perkins @tysonfperkinsdp and Kieran Satour @ksat21 alongside the team at @ga.ru.wa have done exactly that. By blending oral history, contemporary dance, and cinematic expression, they have crafted a deeply moving portrait of truth-telling and community resilience. "Whether it be through peacebuilding, historical truth-telling, community-led filmmaking or a combination of all these things... storytelling is not separate from systems change – it is its most critical ingredient," writes Wiradyuri, Ngemba and Paakantji woman and @commongroundfirstnations CEO @gemma_pol. In this article, Gemma reflects on the legacy and ecosystem of First Nations matriarchy in film and systems change, as discussed in Documentary Australia's recent online Women's Voices event. Gemma moderated the panel discussion with Bunuba leader and @wyutinstitute Chair, Aunty June Oscar AO; Arrernte and Kalkadoon filmmaker and @screenaustralia Director of First Nations Strategy, @rachelperkinsau; Worimi artist, filmmaker and field builder, @gengrieves; and Nyikina Warrwa and Wangkumara Barkindji filmmaker and legal academic, @marlikka_perdrisat. Out at Maliyangaa Ngurra Cultural Centre, Quambone, we have a new mural!!! This incredible mural is so beautiful! What a feat, this is a huge mural!!! Designed by Millmullian (Laurance Magick Dennis aka Uncle Locky) it tells the story of the creation of the Wayilwan marshes. We are so lucky to have Uncle Locky share this story that was passed to him by Wayilwan Elder Uncle Herbie Brown. Although Locky designed the picture and how the story would be laid out, this mural would not be what it is without the artistic expertise of Glenn Dennis who came and painted with Locky for a full week to pull off this painting. Glenn and Locky together, cousins creating this amazing artwork together. We couldn’t be prouder to have this collaboration artwork on the wall of our cultural centre!!! Authentic local story from Country painted by two men from Country. We couldn’t have achieved such a big mural completed so efficiently without the outstanding excellence of artist Glenn Dennis working with Locky. Glenn brings a colourful spirit to everything he does, knowing how to bring colours together in a way that makes the picture pop and sing!! Locky and Glenn worked hard together painting for a full week every day. Locky has a few more details to complete on the mural, but the painting is almost done now. We will formally open the mural in Aboriginal Languages Week on Saturday 24th Oct. Locky will share the story with everyone including a live performance with the Milan Dhiiyaan dancers & Wayilwan language. We are only posting images of a small section of the mural, not the whole thing, because we want people to come out and visit the cultural centre at Quambone to see the whole of the gorgeous mural! Come visit! We need your support in the outback in Wayilwan Country!! This mural was jointly funded by @Commonground - Grounded Story Grants and Milan Dhiiyaan 100% Aboriginal owned arts & cultural business.
