Community Action Bus is a not-for-profit charter bus transportation service. They have been operating for 15 years, and every year they provide over $10,000 worth of free bus trips to our community of local organizations, activism efforts, and educational programming.

They are fundraising to help with some necessary maintenance and operations costs and more excitingly to launch their new (pink) bus!

This year’s Farm Crawl in collaboration with @uviccampusgarden and @communityactionbus was a fruitful tour full of laughter, curiosity, and budding community connections! 🥬

The UVSP extends a special thank you to @haliburton_farm , @sandowncentre, and @neighbourlywineco for welcoming us on July 13th. Thanks to our incredible hosts we were able to introduce ~25 attendees to local food systems, sustainable farming practices, and more!

Haliburton’s tour offered a glimpse into the intersection of organic farming and ecological restoration – discussing techniques like biochar, silage tarps, and cover crops – as we walked about the storied property and nibbled on fresh oats🌾

Attendees were also able to get their hands in the dirt planting broccoli and trellising tomatoes with Sandown, sowing the seeds of regenerative plant knowledge! 🍅 (Check out the CCG’s weekly gardening series for even more growing opportunities)

Wrapping up the crawl, Neighbourly Wine co. taught us about the island’s climate and the adapted grape varieties in their vineyard, offering up samples of their lovely drinks 🍇

Our tour took us across the ancestral territory of the lək̓ʷəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples. We at the UVSP acknowledge the ongoing colonialism which underlies contemporary agriculture, displacing indigenous foods like qʷɬáʔəl/ḰȽO¸EL [kwetlal], and always aspire to platform decolonial efforts and the resurgence of traditional food systems.

Another emerging theme was accessible transportation, as we drove about the peninsula with the remarkable CAB we identified the demand for more touring events. Stay tuned for news on an upcoming Garden Crawl slated for October! 🌱

BEEP BEEP! We’re going farm crawling!🚌🌽

That’s right! Hop aboard the @communityactionbus on Monday, July 13th from 9am-4:30pm, and join us in traveling throughout the unceded territories of the lək̓wəŋən and W̱SÁNEĆ peoples to learn all about farming and the food systems that cradle our community!

Our full itinerary for the day will include: meeting at the Campus Community Garden (CCG) for a welcome and opening circle, before boarding the bus to tour around Haliburton Community Organic Farm @haliburton_farm and learn about their approach to farming, then eating some lunch before re-boarding the bus to visit Sandown Centre for Regenerative Agriculture @sandowncentre and chat about their work. Next we’ll board the bus to Neighbourly Wine Co. @neighbourlywineco for a tour through the vineyard and some snacks and beverages, before traveling back to the CCG for a closing circle. All throughout our day together, there will be many opportunities for laughs, learnings, reflections, and connections, and maybe even some karaoke while riding aboard the bus!

Sign-up for this event is open to students and members of the wider community! There is no cost to participate, however we are limited by the number of spots on the bus (so sign-up early!)🌱

We ask that everyone please bring your own packed lunch, as well as a hat, sunscreen, water bottle, and shoes that you can walk around in comfortably. There will be the option to purchase snacks and beverages at the last stop on the tour, if you would like!

This event is not wheelchair accessible, however, it may be accessible for folks with other mobility needs. At all stops there will be short walking tours, but also places to sit and take in your surroundings on your own time. Please reach out to us by DM or by email (ccgoutreach@uvic.ca) 📧 with any questions regarding accessibility.

Check out the sign-up link in our bio to register (before friday, july 10th pls!) and feel free to leave us any questions in the comments🫶🫶🫶
