We are proud of our YDN Resident Fellows 🙌

We’re sharing the policy report that @zamil_nowshan prepared during his fellowship residency at the @communityofdemocracies , between April and July.

The report assesses how effectively international multilateral mechanisms support young civic actors facing active state repression and autocratization.

Is democracy a youthful thing?

For @mantas.adomenas, the answer lies partly in whether democracy can remain relevant to each new generation.

At a time when democratic institutions face growing pressure, leadership is increasingly contested, and the language used to speak about democracy can feel disconnected from the realities young people face, there is a need to rethink the narrative.

Young people are living in a world shaped by social media, artificial intelligence, conflict and rapidly changing expectations. Democracy must be able to speak to that world.

As Dr. Adomėnas explains, democracy’s strength lies in its ability to adapt and allow each generation to shape the society it lives in according to its needs and aspirations.

This International Day of Democracy, we reflect on the role young people can play in renewing the narrative of democracy and keeping it relevant, vibrant and responsive to the future we want to build.

Last week, our Program Manager represented the organization at a media engagement.

The discussion focused on the Women and Youth Manifesto being put together with support from @weareadvokcng

The Manifesto is designed to reflect the current needs and aspirations of citizens in Ondo State.
For us, this engagement is more than just showing up it’s part of our bigger goal to move citizens from being spectators to becoming active participants in our democracy today.

Youth participation is not a favour to democracy
It is part of democracy. ✊🏾
When young people are given a seat at the table, they bring fresh ideas, bold perspectives and the energy needed to shape the future.

Our voices matter. Our participation matters. And our democracy is stronger when young people are actively involved.

Happy International Youth Day 2026! ❤️
I am delighted to have honoured the invitation by Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung Nigeria to a 2-day consultation on Nigerian Youth Democratic Participation, reflecting the work I’ve continued to champion around youth and democracy

I was honoured to join as a YouthLead representing Nigeria at the Community of Democracies and as a Youth Democracy Network Member a meaningful opportunity to contribute to conversations shaping the future of democracy in Nigeria.

Young people are not just the hope of democracy; we are active participants in shaping it today. And when we talk about inclusive governance, women and young people must be at the table not just in the audience. 🇳🇬❤️

Many thanks to our facilitators from Kenya @meg_muchoki @kefentsemkhari_ from South Africa 🇿🇦 and our Galaletsang from Botswana 🇧🇼

When should democracy be defended?
⚖️ Always.

Last week, the @youthdemocracynetwork hosted a roundtable to address critical challenges in today's democratic backsliding, youth participation, and multilateral support

The discussion highlighted:

📌 Decentralized youth movements are proving resilient under restrictive regimes
📌 State-centric global mechanisms face limits in stopping democratic regression
📌 A growing share of youth political participation is moving online, demanding innovative institutional models

A huge thank you to our YDN Fellows: @zamil_nowshan for moderating, and @sophsuga, @camigb_ar, and @_kwesiyeboah for helping put it all together! 🙌

Grateful to everyone who joined and shared their perspectives 🌍
