For people reentering society after prison, a good job is a pathway to success and economic stability.

RBIJ CEO Maha Jweied joined the panel “Fruits of Labor — Pathways from Prison to Prosperity” at JustUs Ideas Week @justusideas to share how employers are supporting successful reentry through Second Chance Hiring.

Thank you to fellow speakers Erin Purdie, @seiu_org; Candis Tall, @32bjseiu; Kevin Scott, @communityspring; Sam Staten Jr., Laborers’ Local 332; and Henry Dillard, @thelastmileorg for explaining how employers, unions, and community programs are implementing smart labor solutions in our communities.

Alachua County, FL (home to Gainesville) and Durham, NC both gave formerly incarcerated residents $600 a month in unrestricted cash payments for one full year. In both programs, guaranteed income improved financial outcomes for formerly incarcerated Americans and disrupted cycles of recidivism.

Our Executive Director, Sukhi Samra, spoke with Business Insider about the latest results from Gainesville and Durham.

“Guaranteed income really is just a tool to ensure, in the Gainesville and Durham cases especially, that no one is too poor to be free,” Sukhi explained.

Just Income is an innovative guaranteed income program for people affected by the justice system in Alachua County, Florida. Implemented by Former Mayor Lauren Poe, and administered by @CommunitySpring, the pilot program was developed and managed by people who are formerly incarcerated to meet the unique set of challenges that returning citizens face.

People coming home from prison face extraordinary debts and required fees, such as court supervision costs, urinalysis, electronic monitoring, and mandatory classes. At the same time, they face high barriers to obtaining employment and housing, and can be excluded from some crucial assistance programs. As a result, many people struggle to piece together what the state requires, and falling short can result in re-incarceration.

Just Income provided temporary, unconditional monthly payments directly to local residents reentering the Alachua County community after incarceration, beginning in February 2022 with an initial unrestricted cash payment of $1,000 in the first month, followed by $600 in each of the following 11 months.

“Gainesville has demonstrated national leadership by piloting a better alternative to reduce crime and support individuals reentering society after a period of incarceration,” our founder, @MichaelDTubbs, said. “The data confirms that, just like everyone else, formerly incarcerated people use the cash to afford basic necessities, seek employment opportunities and contribute to their families and communities. These results fall in line with the data from more than a dozen other studies and proves yet again that guaranteed income works–and that’s why a majority of voters nationwide support it.”

what a day! good grief. I will be back at @grovestreetfarmersmarket @cypressandgrovebrewing tonight 4-7 — however you’re doing today, I bet bundling up and surrounding yourself with community will lift your spirits. no scones from me, but I will have cozy hats and fundraiser stickers and more. plus there’s live music, warm drinks, string lights, fresh veggies, and other folks be-bopping about.

in honor of MLK day, 50% of today’s profits will go directly to @communityspring. may we continue to learn and unlearn to follow MLK Jr’s (and many others’!) dreams for a more just, more free country for all.

in light of the inaugur@tion today, I want to remind us that we already have so many of the tools to build resiliency and protect each other. locally, lean on each other. have clothing swaps. loan or give your neighbors what they need. get to know your farmers. support orgs like @gnvfgs @foodnotbombsgainesville @gnvbooks2prisoners @givinggardengnv that provide abundance for folks in need. check in on your friends and community members, especially Black/ brown/ disabled/ queer/ trans/ unhoused ones. check in on *yourself*. buy used or local. don’t talk to c0ps. compliment strangers. call out pr0paganda when you see it. get creative, get compassionate. we are capable when we work together.

this is a ceramic piece I made a while ago, intended to be a palette for painting with watercolors. it has sold, but I hope to make more illustrated ceramics with my own words. this was inspired by the schooling patterns of fish, knowing they are safer in numbers. many species of grouping animals often arrange their herds to protect the most vulnerable members of their community — something I find inspiring. I like the idea of this sentiment as a literal tool for creating.

ok, go! hope to see you tonight, or soon! take care!

Join our social justice partner Community Spring on September 27th in Gainesville, FL, for “Unmasking Meritocracy: Beyond the Self-Made Myth.” As part of the 2024 National Day of Action for Basic Income, they’re challenging the idea that success depends only on hard work and talent. View a gallery of photos and narratives that expose how structural inequities like wealth and education skew the playing field.

Posted @withregram • @communityspring Is success truly based on hard work alone, or is the system designed to favor some people from the start?

Join us on September 27th 7:00 - 10PM for ‘Unmasking Meritocracy: Beyond the Self-Made Myth’ and view the gallery of stories and images that challenge the myth of meritocracy.

Tonight, we had a sold-out crowd for our first-ever event with the absolutely scintillating Clint Smith and his very cool interlocutor, Dr. Porchia Moore. Clint was hilarious, brilliant, deep, joyful. We are so grateful that Gainesville came out with such enthusiasm for this first event. 120 souls in a room for a poetry reading on a Tuesday night is no small thing. Thank you to the managers, who knocked it out of the park, and to Community Spring for co-hosting such an amazing night with us. 🧡

We are so inspired by the conversations prompted by @uf_came Maker-in-Residence Braxton Rae. They created a conversation framed around the creation of a 'perpetual stew' in community; moments of sweetness and bitterness, what organizations in the community you put 'stock' into, and where can we gather together to enjoy the soup among other questions. Braxton's love of creating community really shines in their work.
