Writing is not for the faint of heart. Each of us battles the constant barrage of thoughts that make us second-guess our ability and even our call. We face rejection, self-doubt and feeling left behind. But God has truth to address each of the doubts that come against us. We can replace those negative thoughts with what is true.

Instead of worrying about if a publisher says no, that God must be saying no, you can be sure that no man can ever cancel, deny or revoke God’s call on your life.
Revelation 3:7, “These are the words of him who is holy and true, who holds the key of David. What he opens no one can shut, and what he shuts no one can open.” (NIV)

When we worry about not wanting to promote ourselves, instead we can remind ourselves we are glorifying God with our writing.
Matthew 5:14-16, “You are the light of the world. A town built on a hill cannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lamp and put it under a bowl. Instead they put it on its stand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven.” (NIV)

When tempted to believe there is no room left for us in the world of Christian writing, we can remind ourselves God will make a way when it seems there is no way.
Isaiah 43:18-19, “Forget the former things; do not dwell on the past. See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. (NIV)

In the case when we are afraid of facing rejection, we can remember when that happens, God will make us strong. Psalm 56:3-4, “When I am afraid, I put my trust in you. In God, whose word I praise — in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?” (NIV) Galatians 1:10, “Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.” (NIV)

In our information-saturated world, people’s attention spans are growing shorter and shorter, and we can help our readers walk away with meaning if we focus on simplifying our writing.

As writer’s we have a lot to say, and we love using our words to help communicate important messages, but we don’t want to bog down or frustrate our reader with too many words when fewer could be used instead.

Here are four tips to help you do just that!
For each piece of writing try to …

1 - Reduce your idea down to a single sentence
What is the one thought you want your reader to walk away with? If you have more than one, cut it down.

2 - Choose a single thought for each paragraph
Now that you have your idea focused, make sure each paragraph also has focus on supporting that idea without going off onto too many rabbit trails.

3- Edit out any unnecessary words
Read your words again. Are there any unnecessary or repetitive words you could take out or say in a more succinct way?

4 - Make it look easy to read
The more digestible your writing looks to the reader, the more likely they will read it till the end. Keep this in mind as you structure your piece.

We can try our hardest to accomplish dreams and goals, but if we don’t
have people to lift us up when we fail or get discouraged, it can make
those things nearly impossible to accomplish.

Here are five group ideas to empower you to do “together” better — and
how your writing life will change because of it!

1. SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY
Spiritual community centered around what God is doing in your life. It creates space for mutual learning and transformation.

2. WRITING COMMUNITY
Writers need to surround themselves with other writers.
You know exactly what it feels like to be called to write, to be excited to write, to be intimidated to write or to be overwhelmed. No one can understand the life of a writer quite like another writer.

3. PLATFORM COMMUNITY
This is your online community, your social media and blog followers. Cultivate this community as friends, and let them help shape your writing.

4. CRITIQUE COMMUNITY
Being a part of a group where you critique one another’s writing will help make you a better writer as well stick to deadlines!

5. NETWORKING COMMUNITY
Networking is the cultivation of productive relationships for business or ministry purposes. Invest time, energy and resources in order to open potential doors in the future.

It’s important to remember the beauty of the small progress. You may have gone through this list and immediately feel left behind or even more alone. But today, my friend, is the perfect day to get started! #COMPELtraining

Which of these groups would you benefit most from at the moment? Let us know!

It can be easy to rush to the work of our words and forget the need for God's Spirit and strength to help guide them. We don't want to just write words of meaning, but words that touch through the power that He alone can provide.

Here are some thoughts from authors who have been there too!

“Go to God first. All good things come from above, so go to Him for words to put down on the page too. While writing my first book, I would often get sidetracked looking to social media, comparing myself to others, or trying to write a ‘best-selling book’ instead of the book God had for me. But, when I surrendered my pride and humbled myself before the Lord, meaningful words came. In order to let go of ‘perfect’ and lean into the message God has given you, start with Him. Ask Him first. Seek Him first. Knock on His door first. And then say yes to the words He gives you!” - Lara Casey

“Print out and laminate Frederick Buechner’s profound quote on calling (from Wishful Thinking: A Theological ABC): ‘The place God calls you to is the place where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.’ ” - Lisa Harper

Your turn: Are you spending time in prayer and God’s Word daily, giving your writing dreams to Him first and foremost? Leave a heart if you are committed to putting God first in your writing! #compeltraining
