Last week, we made a collaborative recording at Walker Street Gallery and Arts Centre with Fathiah, Jan and Caesar. We talked about the sounds we make and the ideas we each carry to make sense of the moment; we decided how we might say or sing these together, and we taped our collective voicing. We did this as part of our preparations for a new commission to open at the gallery in early March. It was heaps of fun and it sounded great!

As we spend the next few weeks working hard on this project, we're looking for people with connections to the broader Dandenong/Springvale area, as well as Warragul, Warrnambool and Tallangatta. Is this you? Know someone else?

We're looking to make more recordings with community collaborators – either in small IRL sessions, or one-on-one. These recordings centre around ideas for living, our 'universal' truths and the words that help us make sense of the world.

Please DM us if you have a lead or would like to know more!

We also invite anybody in so-called Victoria, or with connections to the aforementioned areas, to record a voice memo for us — you can find much more info at voicememo.cargo.site, which you can also visit via our linktree.

These recordings, edited together, will be captioned. Image descriptions for this post are in alt text.

(Thank you @cityofgreaterdandenong @connectionartsspace … and AB Bakery for the goods!) Miriam, Jan and Caesar smile quietly, listening to Fathiah speaking. They're seated around a table with a microphone each; in the background, the afternoon light streams in from a high window, behind a whiteboard filled with writing.

Thank you to @connectionartspace. Having dedicated time, space, and mentorship support has allowed me to explore a project deeply personal to me. While this teacup set is a showcase of the porcelain techniques and glaze applications I’ve explored during my residency, what I valued most was the process; learning more about my mum and being able to record a part of her history.

In the interview with my mum (my Vietnamese is not the best, but it is enough for us to have a conversation where I ask her to elaborate on vocabulary I’m not familiar with), she recalled her memories with extreme fondness. It was almost as if she’d become her own child self again.

These six cups represent different fragments of those memories. To share some of the stories behind these motifs:

Pine Trees: To remind my mum of the ones that provided her refuge from danger and firewood for cooking and heating in Lạc Sơn Village.

Mangoes: A nod to her childhood mischief. When she was young and sick with a cold, my grandmother told her not to touch the mangoes. Craving the sour green ones dipped in sugar, fish sauce, and chilli, she climbed the trees anyway. She still claims those mangoes are what actually cured her.

I hope these spark a sense of curiosity when you visit the gallery, where I can share the rest of these family histories with you in person. I would love for this to foster a sense of connection. Perhaps you also have personal stories connected to these motifs that remind you of fond times.

Venue: @connectionartspace. 1-9 Walker St, Dandenong
Open: Saturdays 11am-3pm. 17th Jan - 28 Feb 2026

Huge thanks to @connectionartsspace @creative_vic, and @cityofgreaterdandenong for the incredible residency opportunity! 🎨 It was a privilege to connect with such a kind community of artists.
The 8 weeks allowed me to transform 4 sleeping files on my hard drive into fully rendered works. I recommend this program who want direction in their art career. I also thank my friends and family for coming to support me <3
Thank you!!!
