Last night's Hollywood IA Young Worker Coordinating Committee at The Animation Guild brought together L839, L892, L871, L700, L80, L800 and included not just the chairs but at large members of the committees.

We had a full agenda and hours of meaningful discussion, including event planning and challenges facing the new & young film workers of today. We learn more about our similarities and differences every meeting.

9 years ago today, long before we called ourselves @seehumans, we opened our first musical.

my senior year of high school, my friends and i joked — “why isn’t there a shrek 2 musical? let’s just make it ourselves!”

the summer after graduation, @jonathanhaidl and i, with no writing/directing/producing experience, got 25 of our friends together to make a musical. much of the cast didn’t realize that this was no longer a joke — we were really doing it.

we found a children’s theater studio that let us do the show in their space for free. by chance, they had just done a production of Shrek the Musical Jr, and offered to leave up their set for us.

we put up flyers, posted online: free admission to Shrek 2 the Musical. hoped our friends/family would come and we’d all have a good laugh.

we’re backstage on opening night, and my mom (who agreed to play ‘box office’) runs backstage saying “we don’t have enough chairs! there’s a line wrapped around the block!”

so in a dance studio that had about 80 folding chairs, we scoured the building for miscellaneous benches, blocks, stools.. anything sittable to accommodate everyone who came.

meanwhile, @nicky.nbc began scrambling to memorize his lines. he still thought this was a joke, and only then it dawned on the cast that this was a real show about to welcome a real audience.

we packed about 150 people in that room that night, many standing in the back. a mostly Gen Z audience who was ready to witness the absurdity of a show that probably should have remained a joke between friends.

that night changed everything for me. something i created was getting people excited about theater in a way i had never seen before. i never had any intention of being a musical theater writer, but i haven’t stopped since.

since then, we’ve put up over 20 unique productions, and collaborated with nearly 200 individual artists. we’ve learned and grown so much, creating our own opportunities to experiment as Gen Z artists and get our work out there.

make the thing, meet your people, and fail gloriously.
life is too short to let the idea stay in the group chat.

Back in December @yeaforbes called and asked me to design a structure for a steel ceiling piece with adjustable distance for lighting - so I got to work and came up with this. Designed in @vectorworks

You haven’t gripped in LA unless you’ve built a steeldeck platform in the middle of the Los Angeles Theater for a technocrane…

Whirlwind of a day and super thankful to @tasha_duursma for having us. Always a pleasure working alongside @eddiereidfilms. And the excellence of @tccranes and @christianhurley05 on the wheels.

4 different locations throughout the theater spanning 3 floors. A CRLS lighting tree, dolly, track, Max Menace Kino bank rig, ModX goalpost on Long Johns with a Lite Tile softbox, steeldeck techno platform, and just general lighting kept us all busy.

Couldn’t do it without my crew.
