🌳 Bridges of Conscience Across Continents

A shiny day at Constitution Hill, celebrating the historical ties between Italy and South Africa through courage, solidarity and shared memory.

The symbolic ceremony was crowned by the planting of a tree by representatives of Constitution Hill and Archivio Reggio Africa, joined by the delegation of young people from Reggio Emilia currently visiting South Africa for the Soncini OR Tambo Games. This was followed by a symposium marking the pre-launch of the exhibition Bridges of Conscience Across Continents.

The Italian Cultural Institute of Pretoria is proud to support this initiative, fostering cultural exchange and preserving a shared history between Italy and South Africa. 🇮🇹🇿🇦

Beyond hope into the ground we step on, The Palimpsest is a contemporary art exhibition about what we will build, what we could have built, Africans having been left to create, design and imagine our society for ourselves as we saw it fit. A motherland reimagined without the interruption of colonisation and a people free of its burdens, free to engineer society in the ways they see fit. This exhibit takes young black female and male artists from around South Africa and lets them rethink and redesign themselves and their society. Producing linocut print masterpieces, pencil drawn photorealistic recreations of Sarafina and acrylic paintings that represent the re-engineering of our world.

I didn’t expect this exhibition to affect me as deeply as it did. Some stories brought back memories I haven’t thought about in years, and others reminded me of people I love and the people we’ve lost.

I left feeling emotional, grateful, and hopeful. It was a reminder of how much this journey has asked of our communities, and how important it is that we continue telling these stories.

Zero Is Greater is an experience that stays with you long after you leave. ❤️
