What do we pass on to the next generation?

At PAN Amsterdam, we explore what we cherish, the stories we tell and what we choose to pass on. This year, our Charity Partner UNICEF Netherlands brings children’s perspectives into that conversation. For children growing up amid war, violence or displacement, art can offer a way to make sense of their experiences and express what words cannot.

In Sudan, children are given a safe space to draw what they cannot say aloud. In Gaza, more than 11,000 children used pencils and paint to depict the futures they imagine for themselves.

Contour Gallery (Rotterdam) and MATTER (London) join forces at Minor Attractions, presenting six artists whose work approaches the same question from opposite ends: how do you make the intangible real?

Contour brings Paco Dalmau @dalmau_visual_art , Tjitske Oosterholt @tjitskeoosterholt and Jan Pypers @janpypers — sculptural wall painting, Polaroid collage and surreal staged photography, each artist building a world entirely on their own terms.

MATTER brings Alfie Rouy @alfie.rouy , Emilija Povilanskaitė @emilija._____ and Kenji Sakai @kenjisakai_87 — painting, sculpture and installation giving physical form to invisible forces, sensation and inner states.

Two galleries, one room, six ways of making the unreal real.

Until 7 November, @Contour.Gallery in Rotterdam presents ‘The Built and the Grown’, a solo exhibition by Ralf Brueck, whose practice reveals just how malleable a photographic image can be. What happens when a photographer doesn't regard reality as an endpoint, but rather as material to continue working with? The German artist photographs landscapes, architecture and natural phenomena, but primarily uses these images as the starting point for his final works. In doing so, he effectively creates a new, autonomous reality. Brueck dissects, mirrors, distorts, repeats and shifts elements until he arrives at images in which the original world remains recognisable, yet something no longer seems quite right. At times, it becomes nearly impossible to determine where the photograph ends and the construction begins.

De Duitse kunstenaar fotografeert landschappen, architectuur en natuurlijke fenomenen, maar gebruikt die opnames vervolgens vooral als vertrekpunt voor zijn uiteindelijke werken. Zo ontstaat er in feite een nieuwe, zelfstandige werkelijkheid. Brueck ontleedt, spiegelt, vervormt, herhaalt en verschuift net zo lang tot er beelden ontstaan waarin de oorspronkelijke wereld nog wel herkenbaar is, maar niet meer helemaal lijkt te kloppen. Soms is nauwelijks nog vast te stellen waar de opname ophoudt en de constructie begint.

Paco Dalmau (b. 1978, Vila-real, Spain) lives and works in Rotterdam.

Dalmau has several series that he is currently working on in the studio. This is due to his approach to making art that relies on layers of time and accumulation in order to produce a layered transparency on the surface of his canvases. As long as a work stays with him, he continues working on it, adding, subtracting, constructing an image as if he were part of a geological process of addition and wear.

At first sight, it is the pigment combination that stands out. Pinks, yellows, and blues circulate on the surface along with white spray paint and acrylic incursions. These are pigments that are thoroughly worked into resins and adhesive mediums. Dalmau says that all of the materials in his studio are used for things other than their intended purpose as he conducts ongoing experiments with materials. After adding layers of pigmented resins, he tears away at them using industrial-grade sanding tools that leave only traces of the layer and reveal the colours underneath. It is through a progressive daily offering and intense energetic output that the result yields an abstract imaginary. The works end up looking like they could be either a petri dish or a buffed quartz or marble, pointing to the combination of organic, geological, and more-than-human processes with artificial material.

Currently, Dalmau is moving from the flat surface to more sculptural terrain and experiments in scale and form are visible in the studio. Here, he uses off-cuts and remnants that fall away from the process as a starting point, building forms that accrete like stalactites, gathering eons of particulate excess.

What happens when a photograph stops behaving like a window onto reality?
In his two central bodies of work, Synthese and Deconstruction, German artist Ralf Brueck explores photography as something that can construct, distort and ultimately become its own reality.
In Synthese, landscapes, caves, botanical scenes and geological formations are digitally transformed, merging colours, elements and perspectives into strange new unities that hover between the natural and the artificial.
Deconstruction takes the opposite route. Architecture and urban spaces are dismantled through the image, pushing photography towards abstraction — at times bringing it closer to painting or drawing.
Construction and destruction become two sides of the same question: what happens to reality when a photograph begins to assert itself as an image independent of the world it depicts?
