I know, I know—“but Emily Dickinson did it!!”

Respectfully, we are not Emily Dickinson. Our circumstances, our education, and so many other things are SO DIFFERENT. And in this age of AI and social media confusion? Readers are desperate for authenticity.

And we as a society (yes, introverts, even you) are desperate for community.

WHAT CAN YOU DO to get out of your room, your bed, your writing cave, to INTENTIONALLY feed the author in you?

1. GO TRY NEW THINGS. Last week I had the absolute treat of being introduced to @conviviobookworks where I used an actual printing press and bound a notebook by hand!!

2. Invest in ritual hobbies. Whether that’s baking, drawing, gardening—you WILL burn out if writing is all you ever do. And your creativity will suffer for it.

3. Be intentional in building bookish community! We all love our communities here on bookstagram. But screen relationships are just not enough to feed our soul the way it’s meant to be fed. I host a writer’s group every week in my apartment, where I pull out the fine china dishes, serve tea and homemade baked goods, and spend the morning writing and spending time with my local author friends. It’s a tradition going on two years now, and it’s made all of our lives just a little more special.

What do YOU do to feed the creative in you? What does it look like for you to be intentional about in-person community?
