DP Cooper Ulrich shares how the ALEXA 35 helped him to shoot this beautiful awareness piece made in partnership with Foster Village Austin and directed by Paulina Lagudi Ulrich:
ㅤ
"'Foster Village' takes place in a sanctuary where children can feel safe, be themselves, and find some stability in their young lives. The film was shot with real children and the people who care for them, some of the kids as young as two. With no actors, I approached it from an observational, almost documentary point of view. My goal was for the home to feel completely lived in, with nothing staged or crafted. I’ve worked with a lot of kids on camera and I’ve found the simplest setup, done well, is usually best. Then you just embrace the chaos.
ㅤ
With subject matter this heavy, there’s a fine line between imagery that resonates and imagery that sensationalizes. I wanted the camera and the light to disappear into the story and let the people carry it. I committed to one lighting setup per scene, so my gaffer, Luka, and I created pools and pockets of light that were broken and uneven, the way light falls in a real home. That left me with 8-9+ stops between my highlights and my shadows in a single frame. The ALEXA 35’s 17 stops of dynamic range is what made it workable. I could protect the highlights, let them roll off softly and filmically, and still reach deep into the shadows without the image collapsing.
ㅤ
Even in the darkest parts of the frame, the noise stays organic and textural. That latitude let me move quickly and stay present with the kids instead of chasing exposure or re-lighting between setups. Skin tones are natural and my colorist Arianna dialed in the palette beautifully. A big part of my job as a DP is choosing the right tool for the situation so I can capture the director’s vision. Here, as on every project, the ALEXA 35 was exactly the right tool for the job. Thank you, ARRI, for seeing the work."

Something we love to do and do well are interviews. These interviews were all shot in location of the Westwood Holdings office, and as many know…offices can be challenging when it comes to finding an interesting angle for an interview. So we played into the natural lines of the architecture as much as possible and are really happy with the result.

Happy Anniversary @cooperulrich ! We have done a lot in our 12 years of adventures, 7 years of marriage, and 2 children.

I am so thankful that God gave us each other. What we have created together I am so proud of. We are a partnership in every sense of the word.

For us, life is defined by what it is with each other and the kids. And what a privilege that is.

I love you forever and always.

@babyledweanteam breaks it down perfectly. As we are all sold more and more convenience, we end up feeding our children more and more specialized, processed baby/kid foods and less real food.

If this is something you’re interested in learning more about, please consider donating to our documentary donation fund to help us finish post production. We are SOO close to getting this information and footage out there to you all. Link is in our bio.

Episode 4! Ok, we want to know … how are we feeling so far about this? Is it too much? It can’t be too much right? Ok, maybe don’t tell us. Just carry on and drink some wine.

WE ARE SOOOOO CLOSE!!! We are in the final mile of the film but we need something called “finishing funds”. These are the funds needed to complete post-production on the film after it’s done with the edit.

Please consider donating just even $20 to the DONATE link in bio. If everyone put in just a small amount of money, we can finish this ASAP!!
