i swear one of the most frustrating things about having a dog, are people who are unwilling to educate themselves or train their dogs. of course dogs/owners have off days, and there are accidents when dogs slip their leashes/collars. but i’m talking about the people who purposefully let their dogs off leash with no bond to the dog/training/ or willingness to learn. anyway, here’s some ways to properly do this, that i’ve learned from my practice and education from dog trainers.
.
🐕‍🦺 practice, practice, practice! started at home on leash, then gradually moving outside with long line.
🐕‍🦺 once my dog had mastered this, i practiced around distractions - food, people, other dogs, loud city noises, wildlife, ect.
🐕‍🦺 we also did group training for a year, practicing training around other dogs, building relationships, and practicing these skills around these other dogs without engaging with them.
🐕‍🦺 high value treats and building a bond with ertz was extremely important. doing fun things like hikes with him to build our bond and rewarding him for good behaviors with high value treats.
🐕‍🦺 if i feel like he’s overstimulated or having an off days, he gets leashed up for a hike on a long line or flexi leash.
🐕‍🦺 i do no on leash greetings with people or dogs so ertz always looks to come back to me and check in with me. i tried to make it so i am the most important thing to him.

every dog is different, but these are some tips that worked for us! again please leash your dog if it has no recall training to avoid disrupting other people, dogs, wildlife, as well as its own safety.
