It’s turtle-on-the-road season folks. Two in a few days is pretty cool. I’ll always pull over to get them across. I’m fascinated by the biological improbability of snapping turtles in particular. If you see one of these in the road and help it cross, you are helping a creature overcome unbelievable odds that existed even before we started building roads. Just be aware they can hurt you badly and they will likely pee on you if you make any mistakes. This other colorful friend was trying to get across NYSR244. This one was friendlyish, but wouldn’t come out of their shell. #turtle #turtlesinthewild

#dawaresidency Day 5: Dear DAWA followers: on our last day together, thank you again for joining me in my practice this week. Even though I technically have a dedicated office/studio space in our home, a day in my studio looks different each time as I often take photographs and gather reference images and materials outside. And I tend to sprawl into other rooms when I’m creating large-scale 2D work or playing with the CNC laser/router to make pieces like these laser etchings of a sea urchin shell on birch bark. (Two notes: first, I only collect bark that has fallen from the tree, as removing bark from a living tree is damaging. Second, the exoskeleton of a sea urchin – its “shell” – is called a test.)

I’ll close my time with you all by highlighting my two favorite artist assistants: my partner Dan and our greyhound, Bagel. Dan I met when I was in art school: he was glad to spend time with me in the studio then and to tag along on my residency adventures now. I rely on Dan’s technical knowledge for my CNC experiments, and he builds beautiful frames, but most importantly, he’s also an avid and excellent cook.

And here’s my favorite story about Bagel: the first year I resumed making art, I would collect acorns for use in mixed-media pieces whenever the dogs and I were out walking. After a few months, I noticed that a single acorn would sometimes inexplicably appear in the house. Finally, one day after a walk, I saw Bagel gently deposit something she’d been carrying in her mouth onto the kitchen floor. When I walked over to see what she had so carefully brought in, I realized it was an acorn.

Thanks for going to the woods with me this week, DAWA followers. I would love to hear about the human or animal companions who are your strongest supporters in art-making and mental wellness!

#dawaresidency Day 4: Welcome back, DAWA followers! Today, it’s my privilege to share some of the support I have received on my creative journey. Sylvia Plath wrote that “the worst enemy to creativity is self-doubt,” which seems to be an experience that makers often share, regardless of external markers of success. As an artist who has recently returned to making, I am deeply grateful for the encouraging conversations, opportunities, and recognition from friends, colleagues, and arts organizations. Without my local arts councils, alma mater, and community of friends who are makers, I would not have rediscovered confidence and joy in creative play. I also would not have had the chance to dedicate time to making or showing work, writing about and reflecting on my practice, building a website, or experimenting with new techniques.

Sometimes those experiments include mushroom spore prints and/or actual polypore fungi, as I am amazed and delighted by the aesthetic, ecological, and metaphorical properties of fungi. For example, some fungi can communicate need and send support and nutrients through mycelium, the network of root structures supporting fungal communities. I greatly value care as an expression of love and a necessary component of our connection to each other. Theorist and social critic bell hooks identifies the “various ingredients” of love as “care, affection, recognition, respect, commitment, and trust, as well as honest and open communication.” Which people and/or organizations are the ingredients in your community of support? How does your community care for you, and how do you show love to your community?

#dawaresidency Day 3: Hello again, DAWA followers: I appreciate the opportunity to connect with you this week. Shortly after art school, I succumbed to insistent self-doubt and stopped creating art for almost two decades. Eventually, I sought mental health care and slowly learned how to regulate my mind and body when my PTSD is activated. In 2023, I took a risk and applied for a summer art residency through my alma mater and employer. I was able to spend two weeks at a beautiful site on Maine’s Bold Coast, where I restarted my art practice. I drew, painted, hiked, kayaked, rested, read, reflected, and wrote, and above all, I learned that I need to make art to be fully myself. Since then, I feel so much gratitude in that recaptured rush from making. I also have experienced more joy and have felt more grounded, healthy, and whole.

Today I have more work from my Orison series to share with you, specifically some pieces from my artist residency last summer. The French cognate “oraison” distinguishes works in this series that I make in Maine. I find that the meditative aspect of this body of work is enriched by memory when I’m near the place where I grew up, experiencing the distinctive quality of Maine light and recalling my childhood on the coast.

Is there a particular place that is special to you? Whether or not you make site-specific work, how does that place refresh you and/or inspire your creativity?

#dawaresidency Day 2: Thanks for your time and attention this week, DAWA followers. I don’t often talk about my PTSD diagnosis and experiences outside my closest circle, but I’m learning that vulnerability can lead to greater connection. For example, there are moments in my work as an academic administrator when disclosing an appropriate amount of my therapeutic journey can encourage and normalize mental health care for students seeking resources.

In this fraught political and social moment, my ever-present anxiety and depression tempt me to seek refuge from the vituperative 24-hour news cycle. Art-making can also be a retreat: the writer and critic Susan Sontag famously wrote about the gulf between recording and intervening with respect to photography, but the space between creation and action can be challenging for artists in other mediums, as well. However, care and connection are how we survive, heal, and grow, so I’m seeking ways to expand my conversations with viewers and other makers.

Cuban-American artist Ana Mendieta’s “Silueta” series has been highly influential on my work, particularly my “Orisons” series. Of her own practice, Mendieta wrote, “my art is the way I reestablish the bonds that unite me to the Universe.” DAWA followers, are you looking for opportunities to engage more fully with the world due to the current climate? If so, what have you found to be fruitful for you and your practice?
