Many people assume trainers get results instantly. But the truth is part of being a seasoned rider is not striving for perfection, but progress. Trainers have ridden enough horses to know it’s not the 1st try but the 100th try that something clicks for the horse. Our job is to let it click in the horse’s mind so when the client gets on, the horse goes, “oh yah, this! I remember.” If as a trainer you override and don’t let the horse think for themselves, when someone else gets on, the schooling ride will likely not translate. Just remember you’re not proving to the horse that you know how to do it, you’re showing them that they can do it with ANYONE.

Today was a very special day. Dark Horse Equestrian hosted our first clinic with Mark Purcell. Thank you to Mark for a wonderful day. You know it was a good ride when everyone is cooling down saying they’re already sore. Here’s to many more days of putting the work in and having fun!

If I could tell my 16 year old self that Dexter would be such a solid, confident, intuitive lesson horse I would not believe you. Over the last 11 years I’ve questioned many times if I am the best person for Dexter. In the past my anxiety has made it difficult to be present for him when he’s anxious. He knows how I’m feeling long before I do. This can make co regulating in a fearful situation difficult. If there is one thing Dexter has taught me it’s if you show up and keep trying, everything will always work out. Confident horses take YEARS to develop. Even after all this time Dexter is who he is and is naturally a more reserved nervous horse. However with trust, training, and time you can accomplish anything with your horse.

What do you want to accomplish with your horse? What’s holding you back? If it’s the fear of not getting there fast enough, have no fear, every horse and rider is on a different timeline. You can only compare your progress to other people with context. On social media there is often very little context to these complex journeys of growth. No matter what you see online remind yourself to be gentle with yourself and your horse. All your dreams will come true if you just don’t give up 🖤

Do you plan your rides? If so how do you do it?

When I was 12 a horse I was riding panicked on trail, backed down a hill, and flipped on me. This level of panic, from a horse I didn’t know, mirrored my own struggles. My own panic disorder. I struggled with anxiety before then but after the accident it shifted to worse riding anxiety. I had a choice to live in that moment or move on. Move on does not mean forget and we can often learn from these situations. However, if we are going to be present with horses we must allow ourselves to be. To be in the moment. Not in a moment from an hour ago, a day ago, or 30 years ago. Horses are healers. They are ready to join us on a journey of courage and freedom. In order to join them you must trust that they will not lead you astray. Every victory, every accident, every death, every milestone, it’s all for a purpose. To get to go on a journey of love and growth with a horse 🖤

You can have the best ride, the most incredible show, or an unforgettable trail ride. However, there’s something about the quiet moments, sometimes unexpected ones, where you can’t help but feel how much your horse loves you. How much they wait for you to be present and to feel the magic that we can’t access as easily as they can. I had a great ride on Dexter today, full of wonderful moments. But giving him this cookie happened to be my favorite part ❤️

All great horse trainers are tuned into one thing. It all started with loving to just be around horses. From there the desire grew to be with horses as much as possible and to gain more knowledge. The years, horses, set backs, victories, and mentors all eventually made it possible to become a professional. It’s a privilege to ride, train, and show but all of the best professionals can agree quiet moments with a horse can mean the whole world.

Free lunging is a great way to bond with your horse. I wish more people free lunged. I have a hunch that one reason people don’t like to is because of the fear their horse will run into them. In order to ensure your safety boundaries are essential. Horses don’t intrinsically know the rules you’ve decided to set. You have to have the same communication with them consistently. The cue I use for the horses to halt is pointing the whip toward their chest. I love when horses are excited to come see me and in this video Dexter was just walking and I know him well. I could have just let him come up to me. But what happens on a day he spooks? Runs toward me for comfort? And if I’ve let him time and time again being really firm during an emergency might not be enough. Be firm and fair in your practice so if there is an intense moment your horse is used to the boundary.

Here’s a video of Miles working on some poles and adjustability. This was a SUPER fun lesson. And no this is not the energy I bring to every lesson. But when the kids say they want to do pole courses it’s on 😂

Summer 2025 was one to remember! From our first camp to great shows there were so many awesome moments. Growing up I loved being at the barn all summer and it’s great to see so many hard working kids spending their time off playing, riding, and helping us with the horses. We’re so proud of the Dark Horse Team and wish everyone luck on a great school year 🖤🐴
