In our latest blog, Bethlem Gallery Director, Sophie Leighton asks 'Where is the artist in the art?'

"We always walk a very fine line in balancing the biography of an artist against art: we need to honour the artists biography but we want to tell the story of an artwork rather than pathologise a person.

An artist’s experiences, wellbeing – and future – are the priority, and our processes of framing art, collaboratively, are also a duty of care."

We're stepping beyond the programme in our latest Big Picture Film Festival highlight blog!

We chatted with disabled artist Corinne about their poetic short film Behind 'The Severed Wing', exploring the influences behind the film, the meaning of its title and what it means to have their work featured at Big Picture Film Festival.

We also talk about what Corinne hopes audiences will take away from the film - and the possibilities that can emerge when we look beyond the limits placed on us.

Join us for a high-flying double bill that explores birds as powerful symbols of freedom, escape and belonging.

The strand opens with Behind 'The Severed Wing', a poetic and deeply personal film by disabled artist Corinne, in which birdsong inspires a vision beyond the limits of disability. This special abridged version includes unseen footage and a recorded introduction from the artist.

It is followed by Ken Loach’s acclaimed classic 'Kes', the unforgettable story of a young boy whose bond with a kestrel offers hope, purpose and a glimpse of a different future.

Together, these two remarkable films form a thoughtful and uplifting celebration of self-discovery, resilience and the possibilities that emerge when we find connection with the world around us.

July is Disability Pride month 💕

We’ll be celebrating previous participants from Where Are The Disabled Photographers? over the week!

Where Are The Disabled Photographers? is a hybrid programme bringing together photographers with the lived experience of Disability to share their practice and build representation.

Throughout 2024-2025 we ran three pilot events including an “Education Edition” alongside @stillsschool and a London edition at @peckham24photo

So far, Where Are The Disabled Photographers? has featured thirty brilliant participants from across the globe. Thank you to everyone who’s shared their time and practice x

The theme for International Women's Day 2026 is 'Give To Gain'

This brought me up short when I first read it because I never give so that I can gain, that's not giving, that is contractual. But then I read "a campaign to encourage a mindset of generosity and collaboration". Now that's absolutely something I want to encourage.

And so today I'm asking.....
Let's get together and create something powerfully beautiful

A more loving world
Full of peace and compassion
Across divisions

Would you like to collaborate with me?
Or... can I match you with a creative who might like to collaborate with you?
Or.... Would you like to do a poetry or art swap? Perhaps a few of us could get involved in passing on a piece of creativity to inspire someone else.

This isn't about professional writers or poets or artists or creators, though I obviously won't exclude you... this is for everyone. In these times of struggle let's all take time to be creative and share it with each other to see what happens in a generous and giving way.

Tag your friends who might be interested and let's see what happens. And yes, anyone of any gender can join in!

✨EVENT: Join Artist @corinnesdiary for an online Make Art session on 12 January, 6pm. [UPDATE: event is now full]

This online session will be exploring themes of shelter, radical care, and belonging 🎨

Corinne will guide you through making fairy doors and portals, inspired by her childhood creation Daisyland - a magical safe place she entered through a hand-drawn paper fairy door. Daisyland was her shelter: the first place where her disabilities were embraced rather than discriminated against.

This session invites you to imagine your own portal into a place of acceptance, creativity, and comfort.

'The phantom hand reappears: is it Corinne’s? Somebody else’s? The hand grasps a blue makeup crayon, adorning Corinne’s eyes with pigment. Another crayon, a more greenish-blue, pokes at Corinne’s eyes. They look uncomfortable; the crayon jabs at their eyes quite harshly in moments. The process repeats with lipstick, which continually misses Corinne’s mouth and smears across the boundaries of their lips. For me, this feels like a subtle way to convey the reality that Corinne needs others to help them complete tasks like putting on makeup, a form of self-definition, in order to conceive of their appearance. In a post-show ‘behind the scenes’ feature, we learn that the floating hand is that of Corinne’s partner, collaborator, and access support worker, Stephen. It is a stark reminder of the necessity of support networks required by disabled people, something that Corinne describes as being initially begrudging to accept, but later realising that accepting help just gives you ‘more time’, gives you crip time. The freneticism of the scene is contrasted with a backing soundscape of tedium, i.e., a dripping tap. While grating and hard to dismiss, the audience comes to realise that this is indeed the point; Corinne’s daily reality is likely composed of annoying sounds that they aren’t able to do anything about.'
