Leading developers commission. The rest comply.

Every major project begins its public life behind hoardings and papered-over shopfronts. For the build or leasing window, those temporary surfaces are the development’s most visible public presence, seen daily by everyone who passes.

Some developers brand them. Logos, renders, leasing lines.

Some borrow for them. Licensed images from an archive, requirement met.

And some commission. They engage an artist to create for the site, and they buy what the other two cannot. A premium public presence from day one, and the development’s story told in its own voice.

We have always admired the third kind.

From hoarding artworks to window vinyl across vacant tenancies, the budget was always going to be spent. The difference is whether it buys compliance or a landmark.

The full piece, including what the rules actually say in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane, is at the link in bio.
