The myth that women shouldn’t lift weights is #fakenews . The number of times I’ve heard something along the lines of “You’ll look like a man if you lift weights; only men can/should lift weights; women should stick to Zumba; you must be training for something (yeah dickhead, it’s called life); it’s not very womanly/feminine to lift weights; I don’t like the look of a woman who lifts weights”. Insert insecure comment and remark usually made by stupid man etc, etc, etc. I’ve just about heard it all and I’m completely fed up. Part of me is inclined to say “Fuck you, you’re obviously intimidated by strong women” but at the same time, I realise that falls on deaf was and no one ever changed their opinion after being yelled out. The benefit to women lifting weights is almost identical to that of men lifting weights. It’s not a privilege, it’s not wrong and it’s not weird to enjoy it. It’s not strange to enjoy feeling strong 💪🏼, to appreciate your body and all its awesomeness even more so when you start exercising and bettering your PBs and it sure as hell isn’t bad to be PROUD of your body regardless of how you look. Real woman look however the fuck they want, dress how they want to and can do without judgement and criticism-chances are, they judge and criticise themself enough (I know I have fallen into that category). This post highlights the double standard placed on woman to look or behave in a certain way (apparently it’s not feminine to lift weights 🏋🏼‍♀️ - ain’t got time for that level of ignorance). So the next time you catch yourself going to share your opinion on women lifting weights or developing strength or asking why a female is doing something positive for herself; ask yourself, have you ever heard someone say “Start lifting weights otherwise you’ll look like a woman” and think about why that is. It’s a FAR more important question to ask.
