MEET YOUR 2026 LONG BEACH PROFESSIONAL ARTIST FELLOWS!

Five artists. Five distinct voices. One shared commitment to the transformative power of art.

These artists work tirelessly to create, question, document, inspire, and share their talents with the world. Through their individual practices, they help shape the cultural landscape of Long Beach, preserving our stories, challenging perspectives, and opening doors for future generations.

✒️ @ky_phong.paul.tran - Writer
Using the written word to explore identity, preserve stories, and deepen our understanding of the human experience.

🖌 @eric.almanza.art — Painter
Using imagery, and visual expression to challenge perspectives and invite us to see the world through a different lens.

📷 @deadendbrigade — Photographer
Capturing moments, people, and places that become part of our collective memory, preserving the stories of our communities.

✏️ @jamesmakesart — Illustrator
Bringing imagination and storytelling together through illustration, creating visual worlds that communicate beyond time and space.

🎬 @xtine.elaine — Multimedia Artist
Using documentary storytelling, film, and multimedia to amplify creative voices, celebrate underground culture, and preserve the artistic histories that might otherwise go untold.

WHY FUND THE ARTS?

Because art is more than decoration. It is education. It is resistance. It is connection. It is a record of who we are and who we have been.

Art teaches us to question, to empathize, to imagine possibilities beyond our own experiences. It gives a voice to the unheard, preserves the stories of the overlooked, and reminds us that culture is not simply something we consume. It is something we create together.

Thank you to @artslb for continuing to amplify and celebrate the abundance of art and culture that permeates this great city.

You can catch the PAF Exhibition November 14th at The Billie Jean King Main Library, Curated by @anna_katrina_art

Keep your 👀 peeled for further details.

Still riding high from last week. Having the show on the big screen for the city. At this point The Dirty Patti Show is a group effort. I wanted to acknowledge the team that cares and gives their time to this curious puppet whose desire is to spread the word of art far and wide.
Thanks team dirty !!

I can't tell you what an honor it is to be chosen by my city to help prepare for the 2028 Olympics. It was the arts and the DIY attitude that called me to this friendly city 16 years ago. And now I get to amplify and showcase it.

There are so many layers to the artistry, the performers, movements, and people that make this city great. Whatever I do will only crack the surface. But I'm willing and able, ready to roll up my sleeves and get my felt dirty.

Dear Long Beach, I'm your puppet.

Thank you to the City of Long Beach and the @artslb Arts Council for Long Beach for this opportunity.
I’ll have my favorite co-producer, @corystorey , working alongside me to help bring this to life.

@loboincognito and Robert Edward!

@loboincognito was the wizard behind the camera.
He’s always willing to go the extra mile and is genuinely an angel the entire time. Thank you for listening and laughing with me throughout my creative process and for being my friend!

Foam clay and paint works wonders

Robert Edward was the one who was there from beginning to end. We bounced ideas off of each other, painted the walls, built the entrance, etc. As a producer, he helped me document and organize the major things like script and schedule. He’s a boss and I love him.

@daniellioooo was not only the beloved Granny, but also was my go to person for all of my Production Design questions. She helped me discover the magic of cardboard crafts and I don’t think I’ll be going back anytime soon. Danielle ALSO became the puppeteer on the shoot day, and made the creepy spaghetti monsters come to life on strings!

@_books.___ someone give this man a lifetime achievement award/nobel peace prize. lol. we put you through noodle hell and you were still smiling through it. Thank you for letting us drench you in spaghetti sauce. You played the part so well!

Thanks for shopping at Vox Mart

“…Painting is not done to decorate apartments. It is an instrument of war.” — Pablo Picasso

I had the pleasure of interviewing 2026 Professional Artist Fellow Eric Almanza @eric.almanza.art for the Arts Council for Long Beach. @artslb

Eric’s powerful work explores identity, culture, borders, and resistance—and we talked about what it means to create art that doesn’t simply decorate, but speaks, challenges, and confronts.

Dirty Patti had the pleasure of sitting down with Ky-Phong Tran, one of this year's Long Beach Professional Artist Fellows—an award-winning writer, essayist, educator, and proud Long Beach local.

His recent Los Angeles Times essay challenged readers to rethink the legacy of The Fast and the Furious and sparked conversations about Asian American representation in popular culture. It's well worth the read.

Interview coming soon.

Follow along for more conversations with this year's Long Beach Professional Artist Fellows.

It was an honor to spend time with Professional Artist Fellow James Brooks—an artist, illustrator, and teaching artist whose work explores narrative, identity, and culture.

In this short conversation, James reflects on one of his works and the enduring power of ancestral knowledge, memory, and the stories that shape who we are.

You can see James's work, along with the other fellows, at the Billie Jean King Main Library this October. Be sure to follow @jamesmakesart to see more of his work. Special thanks to @artslb
for honoring the artists in our great city.
