Interrupting your feed to say keep up the good work ladies ⭐️👍🏼

sorry the world is like this right now. Yes, you’re right. It is unfair, exhausting, & utterly disgusting existing as a woman in patriarchy.

Don’t let your mind convince you that you are a part of the problem.

What you’re doing to support yourself and everyone you love is enough.

You deserve rest, peace of mind, and time to disengage.

Remember— over functioning is a trauma response. Patriarchy is not yours to fix. It’s okay to sit back and let the men do their work.
.
.
.
Note of nuance: this is NOT telling women to stop engaging in advocacy (That work is crucial to bringing down patriarchy), rather this message invites YOU to not over give you energy to men in your life if they are not interested in changing a system that directly and disproportionately benefits them while directly and disproportionately harming YOU.

This is what lunch looks like when you’re not worried about being bad

Stressed about food? Struggling with guilt when you eat? Feel ashamed of your body? Brain telling you, “Don’t eat that 🍰 ! You’re so bad!”

DM me. I can help.

My brain told me not to go. For so many reasons. Each one, it screamed at me, essential for my survival.

Heights. Cameras. Humans I don’t know. Internal alarm bells went off at the idea of a photoshoot. And now I was going to add a cliff?

The last photoshoot I did was in college. It was the first time I ever modeled. And it did not go as planned. After going back to my house to edit the photos and videos, the photographer—a fellow “yogi”— did something unspeakable to me.

Let’s just say, he went to prison, and I never modeled again.

Eight years later, my brain is still using that one night against me as evidence that having fun, being seen, and trusting others is simply not safe. So when @zealoptics @theskierguy & @tunehealth.co invited me to shoot in Telluride, my was mind quick to say “I don’t f*cking think so—“

“Don’t be an idiot, Haley. You can’t get hurt if you don’t leave the house. Remember what happened in Utah?”
Mhm. Thanks brain. How could I forget. While tempting to listen to the sweet nothings of my trauma-driven fear, I simply couldn’t resist the invitation. In part, because now I know

Your brain can be wrong.

One structure in your brain generates two kinds of fear, making it easy for your brain to file them under the same “this-is-an-existential-threat” alarm even when something may be nbd.

😱Pachad: the fear we feel when our actual life is at risk, like when we’re scaling a cliff

🤯Yirah: the “holy cow” fear that shows up when you’re about to exit your comfort zone, experience something new, and grow.

Both alerts are initiated in the amygdala — which is why we confuse things like genuine business opportunities with existential danger. Same cerebral center. Completely different message. And a completely different outcome when you finally understand the difference within yourself.

The work isn’t getting rid of fear. It’s learning to tell which one is talking.

This weekend with @zealoptics was pure Yirah. Every single second of it.

For the first time since college. My abs hurt from laughing. My legs were wobbly with fatigue. My heart was filled to the absolute brim with joy, new friendships, and new memories.

And I almost said no.

I turn 29 tomorrow. If you know me, you know I love birthdays AND tend to get super in my feels around them. This year is no expectation.

This year I am writing my memoir. As I flip through the pages of my adolescent years, I am overwhelmed with gratitude.

Gratitude for the hardships that made me who I am and now enable me to help so many other people.

Gratitude to the people who invested in saving my life, whether that was in the form of letters, care packages, or financial support.

Gratitude to myself for having the courage to say “enough is enough. Someone please help me. As much as I don’t want to be here, I also really want to stay.”

And now, here we are, 13 years later. I run three companies, I just got recruited to do work I LOVE and cannot wait for that to begin in November, and I’m honoring my childhood dream of writing books.

Given where this story started, I’m pretty amazed by where it went, and so so excited to see where it’s going.

I share all of this in part because it’s easy to forget how far we’ve come. It’s easy to blur the past out, tell your adult self that “it wasn’t that bad,” or even question if everything you went through so long ago even happened. It does sometimes feel like a dream.

But it was all real.

It feels like a gift to visit with my 16 year old self who is so resentful towards life, towards being stuck in this whole human thing (which she makes clear she did not ask to be a part of).

I can’t help but laugh when I hear her complaining about her “stupid curiosity” being the thing that continually prevents her from exiting the human race. My heart aches for her, of course. She was going through it. But even suffering, I crack up at my often blunt and unintentionally ironic observations. Girl just wanted this chapter to end and to know what happens next.

Well, I’ll tell you what happens next. In time…

Its actually a pretty good story. And I’m so grateful to still be here to write it.🙂

Love you,
Haley

PS If you’re struggling to keep writing your story, get honest. Get help. Get curious. I promise, the plot gets GOOD.

SSRIs can be a lifesaving tool for many. Heck, going on an SSRI has helped me choose to stay a human at least 3 times in my less than 30 years here.

That said... providers never have a plan for getting me OFF of these medications….No one seems to have the recipe for how to thrive AFTER a mental health crisis, just prescriptions for “managing” symptoms and conditions.

I hate that.

Because I’m motivated to not depend on Big Pharma for my mental health needs long term, I’m focused on what I can ADD to my life, like:

🏔️ moving to a place with amazing outdoor access
☕️adding probiotics like @goodbru that help regulate serotonin production and increase mineral absorption in the gut
💧 drinking @tunehealth.co to stay hydrated and get the minerals my body needs to function well (especially the magnesium, which we know helps regulate sleep, something I am notoriously bad at)
🖥️ investing nearly $1000 in therapeutic services per month so I can show up well for my clients and community
👯living with roommates so connecting with others is built into my daily routine
🖼️ protecting more unstructured, quiet, creative time to allow my body and mind to recharge
🤣 prioritizing things that bring me joy, like writing, art, and stand up

I share this post not to bash SSRIs or say supplements fix everything. There is no cure all. If you’re struggling to get out of bed or do basic tasks like brushing your teeth, probably worth talking with your doctor about what tools are right for you.

AND…

When you're struggling, remember to do your mental health math:

Don't think about what you can takeaway, but about what you can add:

Joy.
Nourishment.
Community-based or professional care.

In reality, what we call “wellness” tends to be a compilation of things that help you enjoy being human. A lot of these things are cheap or free. Some are worth paying for.

What an epic summer! And what a treat to spend time in Charleston supporting the mental health of the 2026 @follybeachwahine competitors.

So proud of @saltinagraphics for braving the comp environment to push her comfort zone and try something new. AND MAKING IT TO THE FINALS!?!? What a hilarious outcome for someone who insisted they were “winging it” and “just out there to have fun.” Go Bella!

Aside from the comp, this summer @haleyschiek embarked on 60+ hour roadtrip, that included no less than

🗺️ 15 states
🎤 2 podcast interviews
🎶 3 music festivals
🐶 7 dogs
💧 100+ @tunehealth.co hydration & mineralization sticks

And too many friends & colleagues to count. As we shift out of surf season on the mainland and head into fall, we are feeling grateful, stoked, and ready to focus on bringing the next phase of @cosanacoaching to life.

IMPORTANT:

Our coaching caseload is full. If you or a loved one are looking for nontraditional pathways to healing, or holistic mental health support with struggles like body image, disordered eating, people pleasing, maladaptive perfectionism, and complex trauma, please DM @haleyschiek to join our waitlist. Spaces will open again January 2027.

And if you’re interested in upping your hydration & mineralization game, try @tunehealth.co 🙂 use code COSANA to get 25% off your first order.

Love yall!

It’s official official — @haleyschiek will be the @collegeofcharleston keynote speaker for eating disorder awareness week 2027 !

Many people don’t realize that disordered eating is extremely normalized and can be difficult to spot, especially in college environments. Nor do they realize that this can quickly become a more serious problem.

Things like bulking and cutting, wanting to firm your butt up or lose a few pounds don’t seem like a big deal, but these thoughts and behaviors can get out of hand fast, and seriously disrupt one’s ability to learn, connect with others, and contribute to society by showing up as your most energized, authentic self.

I would know🙃

Despite being a 4.0 student, I almost had to drop out of school due to an eating disorder twice. Recovery took a long time, but I am so grateful for everything I went through for bringing me to exactly where I am now. I love my life and thoroughly enjoy being myself, and that is a gift of an experience that I want to share. I look forward to providing insight and perspective that I desperately needed when I was in the throws of disordered eating recovery and offering students hope that no matter what you’ve been through, healing is always possible.

While I am slightly terrified to share my story at scale— so many eyeballs, so much vulnerability—I am also elated about the opportunity to have a positive impact. What an honor.

Thank you SO much to Professor Wesley Senn for making this happen. I am so grateful that Wes cares deeply about these topics and does whatever he can to invest in and improve student wellbeing at COC.

Wes has supported the re-education of clinicians and students on disordered eating since 2021, when he first attended a training with @cosanacoaching on diet culture and fatphobia and has asked Haley to come speak to his psychopathology students every semester since.

Thank you 🙏🏼

Students—DM me or comment any questions you hav!

Being human is pure chaos. Here’s your chance to get a peak into how insane, hard, lively, and lovely, my lil human experience has been since moving out of Puerto Rico.

To catch up on the chaos:

1. brew yourself a cup of coffee,
2. snuggle into your favorite chair,
3. hit the subscribe link in my bio (Substack or direct email newsletter will both get you signed up) then
4. Sit back and enjoy four months worth of stories about my audacious behavior, hilarious side quests, and surprising personal growth.

NOT because my life is insanely interesting or because I am so cool (we KNOW it’s not that…) but because there’s important lessons that we can learn from what others go through that not only make our day-to-day human experience easier, but a little more inspired, audacious, and fun.

So this is your invite to receive FREE monthly comedic material + inspo for surviving the human experience 🫶🏼

To those of you who already subscribe:

Thank you so much for supporting human-generated creative work!! This is a free, small, and kind thing that you personally do to make a big difference not just in my life, but for the collective. Supporting vulnerable, mixed media, long form work like this helps protect our humanity against the attention economy, AI, and the hopelessness that threatens to seep in thinking about the state of affairs in America.

You are not defective - you’re just dysregulated.

This conversation turned into a real one about community, trauma, and why connection can feel scary when your nervous system has been in protection mode for too long.

If you’ve been carrying old wounds, it makes sense that opening up feels hard.

But healing usually starts the moment you risk being seen.

You don’t need to be perfect to belong - you just need support.

Can 96 hours really change everything?

Can shared music opportunities reset a traumatized nervous system, improve mental health, open the door to more authentic adult friendships, and reconnect you with your most radiant, honest self?

After a remarkable weekend at the @officialtelluridebluegrass @haleyschiek is now traveling the country to uncover the answers these very questions.

If you’d like to find out, you’ll either need to subscribe to @haleyschiek on Substack or fly to Telluride, Colorado for the 2027 @officialtelluridebluegrass to find out for yourself.

Part one of the Substack essay series is out now. Stay tuned for part 2, where Haley will share her experience of the much anticipated @rockymountainfolksfestival August 7-9, 2027 in Lyons, CO.

Link to full essay in bio @haleyschiek

A huge thanks to @theskierguy @fallingoffthefloor
