PPPT Stop No. 2: Thank You Books 📚

Next on the itinerary: a bookstore all to ourselves!

Thank You Books opened its doors early for a private PPPT shopping experience, complete with thoughtful recommendations, plenty of time to browse, and the very dangerous freedom to say, “Well, I suppose one more book won’t hurt.”.

We also had the chance to tour their newly renovated and expanded space following their August 1st grand reopening!

Some of us arrived with a reading list. Some followed the staff picks. Some judged entirely by the cover. All methods were fully supported.

Between the jewel-toned shelves, wonderfully curated selection, and warm welcome waiting for us at the door, this stop captured exactly what the Pages in Patina, Pages, & Pours is all about: discovering an independent bookstore with personality, meeting the people who make it special, and leaving with stories we may never have found on our own.

Naturally, several new titles—and a little bookstore merch—climbed aboard the Sprinter with us.

A huge thank-you to the team at Thank You Books for making our group feel so celebrated. Private bookstore shopping and a personal tour of a newly expanded shop before opening hours? We could absolutely get used to this. 📖✨

Here is my *I had a bad week and needed retail therapy* stack from @purplecouchbookshop last night 🤩🫣

I picked up our next Thriller Book Club pick, Marion by @leahrowanbooks, as well as our November pick, Her Last Breath by @taylor.adams.author!

F*cked Up Fairytales was not at all on my radar, but the cover drew me in, so I had to rescue it from the shelf 🤷🏼‍♀️

What should I start with? 🤨

📖 Jillian Knows Places (Bookstore Feature) 📖

A couple of weeks ago, I was downtown in the Loop for brunch with a friend, and so I decided to pop into @exileinbookville for a quick browse. I’m not frequently in the Loop, and so I’ve been sleeping on this bookstore. @exileinbookville truly has the coolest selection of books from a variety of indie and small presses. I only browsed for a bit (downtown parking is EXPENSIVE), but if you have time to kill in downtown Chicago this is a perfect spot to go.

Also, signed stock? Spectacular! We love to see! @tariqshwa is a TSABer so of course we love and support!

Do you think there’s a category of children’s books that’s missing? I’d love to hear your thoughts about this!

As a teen in the 1990s, cosbrarian picked up a groundbreaking anthology for LGBTQ+ kids, Am I Blue edited by Marion Dane Bauer. “I remember it all these years later as a book that helped grow my empathy for the queer community.” Is there a book you read early in life that you would recommend to celebrate Pride Month?

Have you ever watched a controversy hit social media and wished someone with actual knowledge could break it down for you? As a children’s librarian and lover of kidlit, cosbrarian was very excited for the release of Mac Barnett’s book about children’s literature, Make Believe, and then it came out that he called 94.7% of children’s books crud. “It also seems to imply that he doesn’t do a very good job at reading his colleagues’ works–because I have rarely come away from a children’s book thinking ‘wow, that was super preachy.’”

One of my favorite finds from @bookcon - with an honorable mention to the Peonies from my garden 😀

Last year, alongside a committed coalition of librarians, authors, teachers, and students we passed the “Freedom to Read” law to prohibit censorship in our public libraries!

Libraries have always been a safe haven for me, from spending recess inside my school library, to spending Summer evenings at our local library as a teenager, to adulthood where I’ve hosted countless meetings in our libraries and even made appearances as Spider-Man.

So it was an absolute honor to be awarded the “2026 Library Champion” Award by the RI Library Association alongside Senator McKenney! It was also a special moment to hear from talented author and local librarian Liz Gotauco as she delivered an incredible keynote 🫶🏽💕

For those of you not in the kid lit world, let me introduce you to the 94% crud comment that has taken this world by storm in the last day or so...👀

In case you're wondering, I do not agree with this quote one bit (unless we are talking about all of the AI generated slop on Amazon, which is where my mind originally went). This is why I so struggle to part with picture books and why I've scanned over 10,000 titles into my forthcoming picture book database...

I love children's books, more today than ever before ❤️

NEW EP!: AMELIE (2001) w/ @cosbrarian

This one’s for the quirky girls! Let’s discuss the American obsession w/ the aesthetics of French cinema, the fixation on fixing other people’s problems to ignore your own, and a love of photobooths.

Listen wherever you get your podcasts!
