How grateful am I to experience two things this month that remind me of the pain, beauty, and fun of life?

Running the Chicago Marathon during my ICU block was not easy. Between working 60hr weeks, nights, early mornings, finding time outside, and taking a day off to run 26.2 miles. It was hard.

But what’s harder is watching a loved one suffer. Hearing that your father had a bleed affecting half his brain, or seeing a sibling pass away. Hard is watching someone’s heart stop, saying good bye to your child for the last time, or pronouncing a death in front of a family.

Hard is competing as an athlete with a disability, or running carrying weight no one else can see. Hard is running for your parents, or for a friend you’ll never see again.

The hard I get to face is a privilege: to feel exhausted from something I dreamed of, to grow into someone I haven’t been yet. I try not to take running too seriously; I get to have fun roaming streets and taking in sights, pushing myself, and tackling my great challenges.

So much respect to my friends living an active life outside the hospital, because that is so hard. And every struggle and feeling is valid. But sometimes we get so caught up in our daily grind that we forget how fortunate we are to have the very things we complain about.

Tokyo Marathon 2026 - The Day We Unite!

Tokyo has been at the top of my destination bucket list forever, but not even in my dreams would I have been able to experience 42 kilometers of it like this. Everything was so beautiful, from the bustling expo to the incredibly kind volunteers (arigato gozaimasu 🫰) —the organization and efficiency were unreal 😍

This was especially meaningful as it was my first time running with a charity, @npofamilyhouse. I’m so happy I met with them before, during, and after the run! I’m so grateful for all the work they do to provide nearby homes to families whose children have been affected by illness ❤️‍🩹. My donation meant that fundraising was not necessary for this marathon, but will do more #runforcharity in the future! 🎗️

Much more to share from just this race alone, that makes it my 4th #marathon and 2nd #abottworldmarathonmajors
Thank you everyone with the support and kudos along the way. Baby me would be in awe 🥹

The most fun I’ve ever had in a race. Last year, I ran Chicago mainly for myself. This year, it was entirely for others. All weekend, I met runners from across the world, each with their own story of how they got here. Through 29 neighborhoods and 42 kilometers, I watched a city come alive where boundaries and papers didn’t matter. We just ran side by side, every cheer a reminder of our shared humanity.

It’s impossible to ignore the world beyond the course: a city facing division from outside forces, families torn apart by borders, and people across the globe enduring war and loss. Against that backdrop, it’s a privilege to run freely amongst people who open their arms and hearts. We get to run these races because others fight every day for safety, for belonging, and for the chance to move without fear. That’s not something I take for granted.

To me, the marathon has never been about chasing time. It’s about showing up for yourself, each other, and for a world we hope to build.
