TUMBLE🎄🤼‍♀️ | THE FIRST RULE OF PUNK 🎶🎤✂️| STRANGE BIRDS 🦩🦚from @penguinkids

POSTS STORIES REELS TAGGED

OH MY GOSH I am FINALLY done with the embroidery on my bookshelf sweater. A bit more work now to put it all together but I am so glad to be done with the embroidery!

The back is adult books, plus a bottom shelf of more middle grade, which could not be contained to one sleeve, and a side panel of plays.

Now to construct it into a sweater!

Here are my go-to recs for to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month for readers ages 8-12.

These books are not only praised by critics, but (in my opinion) loved by my students.

Whether you're looking for sci-fi, playful or reflective graphic novels, stories with magic, and stories with heart, these are the ones parents should get in their kiddos' hands.

If we haven't met yet, I'm a middle school librarian, and I love my day job because it rarely feels like work. 🥰

Follow for book recs for readers of all ages!

As we’re preparing for #HispanicHeritageMonth and making our book displays, make sure you’re looking beyond the stereotypical names and skin colors on the book covers to represent the entire Latine/Hispanic diaspora! @onedarkally posted in her story about her Black and Puerto Rican heritage and I’m so glad that she took the time and energy to educate us on looking beyond to make sure we’re representing the entirety of the community and our students’ experience. Check out these #middlegradebooks and #yabooks by and about the Afro-Latine community! #schoollibrary #bookrecommendations

Tuesday Booklist | Literacy is Legacy 📚
Tuesday, August 25, 2026

This week, we shared one of our guiding principles:

At CWMF, we believe becoming a stronger reader isn’t only about reading more. It’s about learning to find deeper meaning in what they read.

For expanding readers ages 9 to 12, that means beginning to look beyond what happens in a story and asking why it matters.

At this stage, readers are learning to notice character choices, understand different perspectives, make connections, question assumptions, and recognize the bigger ideas beneath the plot.

This week’s selections were chosen because each one gives young readers something deeper to consider. Together, they explore how family, history, culture, identity, friendship, loss, and belonging can shape the way people experience the world. They invite readers to consider why characters make certain choices, how circumstances influence perspective, and how a story can reveal meaning that is not immediately visible on the page.

For expanding readers, that kind of reading matters. It strengthens comprehension while developing the ability to interpret, reflect, connect ideas, and understand experiences beyond their own. These are the skills that begin to transform reading from simply understanding what a story says into thinking about what a story means.

Recommended Reads (Ages 9 to 12 | Expanding Readers):

📖 Finding Langston by Lesa Cline Ransome
🏅 Coretta Scott King Author Honor

📖 The Many Meanings of Meilan by Andrea Wang
⭐ New York Times Best Children’s Book of 2021

📖 Hello, Universe by Erin Entrada Kelly
🏅 Newbery Medal Winner

📖 The Night Diary by Veera Hiranandani
🏅 Newbery Honor

📖 The First Rule of Punk by Celia C. Pérez
🏅 Pura Belpré Author Honor

The goal is not simply to finish more books.

It is to come away from them understanding more.

Watching our children find their people is one of the sweetest parts of parenting.

And watching them feel left out, lonely, or struggle with friendships? That hurts our hearts in a way that's hard to explain.

Most of us spend a lot of time thinking about helping our children find good friends.

But we also have an opportunity to help them be good friends.

Stories are one of our favourite ways to do that.

In honour of International Friendship Day, our MAR Jr. Reviewer team have put together a collection of about friendship for ages 5–18. These stories explore kindness, belonging, welcoming new friends, navigating differences, repairing relationships, and standing up for one another.

📚 We'd love to know...
What's a children's or YA book that has helped your child think differently about friendship?

Share it in the comments as we're always looking to grow our reading lists!

For more book recommendations, and details on these reads, head to our blog. Link in bio.

And if you have a young reader who loves books, we'd love to have them join MAR Jr. Reviewers. Their recommendations help us discover more diverse stories for families across Canada, one book at a time.

Book recommendations based on your favorite song from Noah Kahan’s new album, The Great Divide 🐞

We compiled kids book recommendations loosely based on the themes or a lyric from the songs. It’s our hope that you find some to add to yours or your kids’ tbr.

We’re headed to the concert this weekend & we hope you’ll consider donating off of wishlist based on your favorite song to help us fill our free libraries for kids across rural communities in North Carolina. Most books are $10 & under, that’s the cost of a coffee, & you could help save a kids life by showing them they aren’t alone.

What’s your favorite song from the album??
