Help! The racks at @craigs_vinyl HQ are full, again!
-
Think I might have to take out all the 12” singles from the racks, I’ve got loads of 90’s club/dance/weird shit that I don’t listen to anymore taking up room!!

As Arthur C. Lee says in the lyrics “I’m full to the brim, sorry man I can’t let you in”. 😂

Question: it’s 1995, what album from the UK are you listening to?
-
1995 was Britpop at full throttle. Pulp dropped Different Class and Common People alone is enough to define a decade. Smart, sharp, unflinching, and impossible to forget.
-
Oasis stormed in with (What’s the Story) Morning Glory?, giving the world Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back in Anger. Stadium-sized, swagger-filled, and still massive today. Blur answered back with The Great Escape that is cheeky, clever, perfectly British, with Country House and The Universal proving they could do pop with brains.
-
Other UK acts weren’t holding back either. Supergrass hit hard with I Should Coco, Skunk Anansie tore up the alt-rock scene with Paranoid & Sunburnt, and Radiohead’s The Bends hinted at the epic heights to come. Even Simply Red’s Life showed soul and pop could still dominate the charts. On by Echobelly is a sharp, hook-filled Britpop debut packed with punchy guitars, confident attitude, and timeless ’90s indie energy.
-
1995 wasn’t just a year, it was a soundtrack of attitude, energy, and songs you still sing today.

Question: it’s 1995, what album from outside the UK are you listening to?
-
1995 wasn’t just a landmark year in the UK, internationally, it was just as explosive. Across the US and beyond, alternative rock, pop-punk, and experimental pop all hit defining peaks.
-
No Doubt – Tragic Kingdom - A breakthrough record packed with hooks. “Just a Girl” and “Don’t Speak” blended ska, pop, and alternative rock into something radio-dominating yet distinctive.
-
Foo Fighters – Dave Grohl’s post-Nirvana debut was raw, melodic, and surprisingly upbeat. Songs like “This Is a Call” and “Big Me” proved this wasn’t a side project, it was the start of something major. I can’t wait to hear their new album!
-
Green Day – Insomniac - Darker and heavier than Dookie, Insomniac showed a band pushing back against sudden fame. “Geek Stink Breath” and “Brain Stew” gave pop-punk a sharper edge.
-
The Smashing Pumpkins – Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness
Ambitious and sprawling, this double album delivered epics like “1979” and “Tonight, Tonight.” It was grand, dramatic, and unapologetically expansive.
-
Alanis Morissette – Jagged Little Pill
One of the decade’s defining releases. “You Oughta Know” and “Ironic” turned confessional songwriting into a global movement, reshaping mainstream pop.
-
Together, these records and many others show how 1995 was a defining global moment. Alternative music wasn’t underground anymore, it was mainstream, ambitious, emotional, and diverse. From confessional pop to sprawling rock epics, the year helped shape the sound of the rest of the decade.

Question: It’s 1994, what album from the US are you listening to?
-
1994 was a landmark year for music in the U.S. Nine Inch Nails’ The Downward Spiral delivered industrial intensity like nothing before it. Hole’s Live Through This fused raw emotion with fierce, confrontational anthems. Weezer’s Blue Album brought irresistible hooks and smart, nerdy rock charm, while Soundgarden’s Superunknown stunned listeners with dark, melodic grunge, crowned by the unforgettable, haunting hit “Black Hole Sun.” Each release captured a distinct voice, making 1994 a truly defining year for alternative and rock music.
-
I was lucky enough to see Green Day live in ’98, which was an absolutely unforgettable experience, I still remember the drummer setting his kit on fire. I also caught Nine Inch Nails at Brixton Academy London in ’99; a completely different atmosphere, darker and more intense, but just as powerful and memorable.
-
Bonus question: Which album is hidden under my hand? Clue… They are from Seattle and the album was released on an independent label called Crunch Melody Records

Question: It’s 1994, what album are you listening to?
-
1994 was such a huge year for music that I’m going to need a separate post just for albums outside the UK!
-
In the UK, it was a landmark year: Oasis stormed in with the swaggering debut Definitely Maybe, while Blur’s Parklife served witty, catchy snapshots of British life. Pulp’s His ‘n’ Hers mixed sharp storytelling with irresistible pop, and Elastica’s self-titled album delivered punky, minimalist energy. Rockers like Ash, Terrorvision, and The Charlatans brought fun, hook-filled riffs, while Bush’s Sixteen Stone, powered by the driving force of “Machinehead”, catapulted them to even greater fame in the US. And let’s not forget The Prodigy’s Music for the Jilted Generation, which shook up the rave scene with anarchic beats!
-
For me, the energy of “Machinehead” by Bush makes it one of my favorite tracks from ’94. Ash’s “Jack Names the Planets” also brings back fond memories as my friends’ band covered it regularly at the local music pub!

Bonus question: Which album is hidden under my hand? Clue… they hail from the hometown of the artist Banksy!

Question: It’s 1993 what album are you playing?
-
1993 was a remarkable year for music, producing albums that still resonate today. Radiohead’s Pablo Honey introduced a band destined for greatness, blending raw alternative energy with introspective lyrics. Nirvana’s In Utero pushed grunge into daring, emotional territory, showcasing the band’s raw power and vulnerability.
-
Meanwhile, Smashing Pumpkins’ Siamese Dream combined lush, layered guitars with heartfelt lyrics, creating an alternative rock masterpiece. Each of these albums captured the spirit of the early ’90s while leaving a lasting impact on their genres!
-
Counting Crows’ August and Everything After captured raw emotion with heartfelt storytelling and melodic richness, announcing a band with a timeless voice. I still probably listen to this album more than any other!
-
The Levellers’ Levelling the Land delivered infectious folk-punk energy, blending catchy tunes with socially conscious lyrics that especially resonate today. The Levellers were the first band I saw live with my friends as a teenager!!!

Question: it’s 1992, what album are you spinning?
It was another stellar year of great albums! Blind Melon’s self‑titled debut album was a refreshing burst of rootsy alt‑rock that balanced raw emotion with melodic craftsmanship. From the wistful introspection of “No Rain”, a song that became a defining anthem of the era, to the gritty drive of tracks like “Tones of Home” and “Paper Scratcher,” the album showcases the band’s range and coherence. Shannon Hoon’s distinctive, soulful vocals give every song a heartfelt edge, and the band’s blend of folk, blues, and psychedelic rock feels timeless rather than derivative. It’s an album that’s both instantly catchy and rich enough to reward repeated listens, making a strong statement right out of the gate!
-
1992 was a landmark year across genres. In rock, Alice in Chains’ Dirt and Stone Temple Pilots’ Core brought grunge to mainstream audiences, while Rage Against the Machine’s self-titled debut introduced politically charged rap-rock. Hip-hop saw the Beastie Boys’ Check Your Head blending live instruments with classic sampling, and Dr. Dre’s The Chronic revolutionized West Coast rap with G-funk. Pop and alternative thrived too, with R.E.M.’s Automatic for the People offering reflective, melodic storytelling, and Red Hot Chili Peppers’ What Hits!? compiling their early funk-rock anthems. Across genres, 1992 was a year of experimentation, crossovers, and iconic debuts that would define the decade.

1991 - What a time to be ALIVE!
Question: It’s 1991, what album are you playing?
-
1991 was a turning point in rock music, a year when the sound of a generation broke wide open. Pearl Jam’s Ten delivered raw emotion and sweeping, emotionally charged tracks, while Nirvana’s Nevermind detonated grunge into the mainstream and changed alternative rock forever. Guns N’ Roses went big and bold with the ambitious Use Your Illusion I & II, proving excess and experimentation could coexist. R.E.M.’s Out of Time showed a softer, more melodic side of alternative music, and Smashing Pumpkins’ Gish blended psychedelia and metal into something fresh and powerful. Together, these albums didn’t just define 1991, they reshaped the future of rock.

Question: It’s 1990, what album are you playing?
-
Today I’m listening to The LA’s 1990
self-titled album! From hearing the first note it feels like opening a time capsule of a city’s restless energy at the dawn of the ’90s. What’s remarkable is how effortlessly it blends heartbreak, wit, and attitude. The obvious stand out song for me is “There She Goes”. This song never ages and is a favourite amongst a great all round album! Over the years, it’s easy to hear how this record quietly shaped the British indie landscape, inspiring a generation of bands to marry pop hooks with raw honesty. It’s not just an album, it’s a moment you step into, and it still resonates decades later.
