Check out the latest footage of @crazyhorsememorial! Mountain carvers have been hard at work on Crazy Horse’s hand in preparation for the 75th anniversary in June. The crew is currently working on the nail of Crazy Horse’s outstretched index finger. When complete, the fingernail will be almost 7 feet long and 6 feet wide!

Aerial footage also gives a better picture of how much rock has been removed on all sides to get to this point. Wow!

Did you know the entirety of Mt. Rushmore can fit inside Crazy Horse's cheek?

If u go to South Dakota for the 'murican pride, be sure to stop over at this fascinating monument. When the US started working on Mt. Rushmore, the Native Americans were like, "yo, we are proud of our history too, we'd like to honor our heros as well." At the time, the Lakota tribe attempted to get a permit to erect a monument in honor of Crazy Horse. Crazy Horse was a war leader who took up arms against the US in the fight against encroachment by white Americans and fought to preserve the traditions of the Lakota people. His success and bravery on the battlefield earned him the respect of both sides. Unfortunately, his fight was against the US so he was basically considered an enemy of the state so the government was like, screw u if u think u can get a permit for building a monument of that guy.

Luckily, however, there was a gold rush happening in South Dakota so the leaders of the project instead applied for a mining permit. There were no rules as to what a mining operation had to look like, and that's how the project finally started. It won't finish for some time after we are all gone though because it has zero federal funding to this day and is basically the work of a single family. You can see in this pic the awesome old trucks and equipment that they still maintain and use on the project. When completed it will depict the great warrior with wild flowing hair, riding his horse, and will be the world's largest sculpture at 563 feet (172 m) tall and 641 feet (195 m) wide.

When we first came here I really didn’t know to much on the memorial. I was so blown away at the story and the message that it brought . - So the story behind it goes like this. Chief Henry Standing Bear commissioned this piece to an incredible master carver Korczak Ziolkowski in the early 1940s. He didn’t start carving tho u till 1948 and still going on today . It crazy to think that over 70 years later this project still is in the process . He knew that he would not be able to finish it so he left an instruction manual to his family and his kids have taken it over . Why it’s taken so long as well is the funding . It’s 100 percent non profit and they only take donations they want no help from the government as this is tucked away in the black hills mountains . - They have also been working on this museum and cultural center which has expanded from what I was told by people who hadn’t visited in 20 years and trying to educated and keep the Native American culture alive . “Never forget your dreams “ - Korczak Ziolkowski .

Had an amazing art walk with the best guide ever @dtlvartwalk today. Such an amazing experience to hear the story behind each piece of artistic expression. @lizsisko we’re doing this next time you’re in town. We’re very fortunate to live in a city with such generous and talented people giving back to create this amazing art district. @djcrykit We found you 🤗
First video by @pixelpancho is really nice to keep in perspective for any young ambitious person trying to make it in Vegas to keep in mind.
A big inspiration for the @houston_bros was this up and coming arts district when designing the most intimate and intricately designed club in the history of Vegas @ontherecordlv

The next stop was crazy horse . I was so taken back by the story of this memorial done in the honor of the Native American tribes with “crazy horse “ who was an amazing warrior to represent the people . This memorial was started in 1948 71 years ago and still under construction as it is nonprofit and funded on donations . They want no money from the government and to make this something for the people . I love the idea and I love what it represents I hop to keep coming back through the years to see the progress 🐎 .

Can you see the 26m face carved into South Dakota's 27th highest mountain in the heart of the Black Hills behind me? I couldn't see it either. What you should see is a sculpted memorial honouring Native American hero and Lakota leader, Crazy Horse. This thick fog meant we were unable to drive to the top as planned. We did come past on the next clear day though, to view it from a distance. Sculptor Korczak Ziolkowski spent the last 36 years of his life to the memorial to help keep the American Indian culture and heritage alive. It's a project his wife Ruth continued until she died in 2014, and their children and grandchildren continue today. It's far from complete though. The final product will be 195m long and more than 171m high, featuring Crazy Horse - the war hero who refused to accept the government's efforts to confine his people to reservations - riding a horse with a flowing mane, pointing in front of him. The back of his head and arm have an estimated completion time of 6-11 years. It's a project Korczak and Ruth never got to see finished and being decades away from completion, many of their children dedicating their lives to finish their father's dream will never see the end result either. Swipe to see what we eventually saw and what we could have seen. #hifromsd #indigenous #travel
