✨Old-Skool Challenge Club ✨

My goodness, what a crazy week it’s been!

What started as a germ of an idea last Thursday has captured the imagination of Booksta and given it a good old shake up!

A sign—if ever one was needed—that people want to return to the Booksta of yore, when no one had heard of algorithms, engagement groups and follow trains. When it was all about the community, the books, the banter and, most importantly, the FUN!

So, I’m here today to share with you the second of this week’s old-skool challenges, as set by @jac_in_a_book — an #IAmAnAutumn stack.

Now, I have to confess that this is an expression I’ve never heard of. I keep thinking a word is missing — an autumn what? An autumn leaf? An autumn breeze? An autumn day?

But, I’m reconciled to the fact the I am clearly the ‘old’ in ‘old-skool 👵🏼

Never mind 🙄

The challenge was to create a post showcasing all the glorious colors of autumn. And I think I’ve managed that 🍂🍁🍂

And, in true old-skool style, I’m using my 20 tags to invite some old friends to attempt the challenge. No pressure, of course.

Want to join in the most trending group on Booksta? Drop an ‘I’m in’ below 👇

5 BOOKS I…

Wish I could read again vs. 5 I should have DNF’d.

This is inspired by @barbbookedup who tagged me in this one.

The first five are of course ones I loved and would enjoy reading for the first time again whereas the second slide are basically books from my declutter pile.

I’ll keep Gifted & Talented because I want to give it another shot. Sisters Brothers is one I didn’t enjoy nearly twenty years ago, but will keep it because I think my mind can be changed.

What do you do with books you want to get rid of?

"That was out of control. Reckless. I let myself go in a way I’ve never done before. And it felt really good."
Ashley Elston, First Lie Wins

So I splurged and bought alot of Book of the Month books. I used to remember I would limit myself on a monthly basis because I was prioritizing a lot of manga but now, I guess I'm back to buying in bulk.

My current read is First Lie Wins and it is really good. I'm also loving the audiobook for this one as well. So far I am halfway through and I cannot wait until I reach the plot twist. Not that this book hasn't been giving me enough plot twists already. I will get back with a review/rating once I'm done.

Qotd: what's your current read?

As always my DMs are open for you. Take

care.

⁉️DID YOU KNOW⁉️
•
You can ask ChatGPT to make your pet into a person!!!
•
This is my lovely old lady Ellie. She had to leave us so she could live her best life without a toddler terrorizing her. But she’s still my favorite pet I’ve ever had and I miss her so much. When I learned you could get an AI image of your pet, I knew the exact image I wanted to use. Of course it was a book photo!
•
And now I want this lady to be my best friend! Look at her amazing taste in books!

Could this be a tag we do? (Is it already?) We could call it #mypetasaperson but bookish. Who wants to join me?

I'm halfway through this #bookstagrammademedoit book, You Could Be So Pretty by @hollybourneya. I'm glad I read a couple of great reviews for this one, otherwise it would have totally eluded me!

What's the last book you read, based on a #bookstagram review?

Happy weekend, everyone! May the weather be calm, the coffee satisfying, and the books brilliant!

Hello, all! Happy Easter! Do you have anything nice planned? I was super excited to get The Prisoner's Throne from the lovely people @allenandunwinnz last week, as it was one of my most anticipated books for this year... definitely a drop everything and read as soon as it arrived! I'm always torn between appreciating that Holly Black’s books are quite slender and well plotted, and wanting them to last just a bit longer! I fell in love with The Folk of the Air series as soon as I read the first book, and that love affair shows no signs of abating with this latest, the follow up to The Stolen Heir, which I re-read a few weeks ago so I could get the absolute best out of the new one - I don't do that often! So, the big question... did it live up to my hopes? Yes, it did... and I think I liked it even better than The Stolen Heir!

I won't go into too many details about the plot in case anyone hasn't read the first, but The Stolen Heir ended in an agonising way for me, and I was hanging out to see what would happen to Oak and Suren. I love these two! Holly Black is an absolute master at creating flawed, enigmatic characters where violence is always simmering just below the surface, but where there is often good too, even if it is hidden pretty deep! I felt so sorry for Suren in book one, and while she has a lot more power in this book, I still found her such a sympathetic character. Oak is just so fabulous too. Both of them have such complex yet very different upbringings, and I love that they see something in each other and find a connection and honesty that they can't find with anyone else.

One of my favourite things about this series of books is the world-building and how fully immersed we become in all things faerie. I'm fascinated by this world - how dangerous it is to survive and trust and how much political intrigue, plotting and backstabbing there is. I love the descriptions of the faeries, clothes, castles and food, and I'd love to visit if my safety could be guaranteed!

I didn't know how everything was going to resolve, and I think it was such a clever and twisty plot. I’m tagging a few friends to show me their #seriestoshoutabout !❤️

Book reviews ... and #seriestoshoutabout

Hello all, and happy weekend! I've got #twoofakind here for you today, and what a wonderful pair these books were! I love how beautifully these covers match, but what's really important is how good they both were! I liked the first one so much I read them back to back, as I just couldn't bear to say goodbye to the wonderful MC, Lucas Walker. I had to know where his story was going ... plus, the second is even higher rated on Goodreads than the first, and that's saying something! I can’t decide which I liked best...😊

You know I just love an Auzzie outback setting, and the first DS Walker novel, Outback, gave me that in spades! What a wonderful sense of place! It worked so well giving us both Lucas' perspective, as a local who has strong emotional connections to the land, and Barbara's, a city woman from Germany, who just sees emptiness and dust and feels nothing but the unrelenting heat. Lucas and Barbara are so likable, and I got attached to both of them. As for the mystery, it's a goodie! The tension builds beautifully as we switch between the perspectives of the kidnapped backpackers, the police (including a crooked cop), the local drug dealers and the dangerous perpetrator. I got a fantastic sense of life in this small outback town, and felt like I could picture the cast of colourful locals who people it.

Paradise, book 2 of the series, is set on the Gold Coast and you couldn't get a more different setting. I thought I might struggle more to connect with this one, but I was hooked immediately by Wolf's assured and very readable style and the grisly opening. I was so pleased to see a few familiar characters pop up as well, but having said that, you could totally read both books as stand-alones. This was a cracking read!

I think Lucas might be my favourite new detective, and if it's not clear, I heartily recommend these two books on every level! I'm hoping there will be more in this intelligent, gripping series, and I'll be lining up to get my hands on them! Thanks so much to @echo_publishing for these two - and I'm tagging a few friends to show me #twoofakind or #seriestoshoutabout too...

Book review... and #dinnerpartystack 🍵🍛🥧

Hello people! A change of pace today with a non-fiction book, as well as a challenge. Do you like a new cookbook, or do you keep going back to your tried and true recipes? I love getting some fresh inspiration, but I’m a shocker for falling back on the same old meals. However Fresh appealed to me on a few different levels - first, it's very plant based, with an emphasis on using ingredients you can grow yourself, and second, the recipes were all tested by school children. I'm not an accomplished cook - I'd much rather bake - so I figured if kids could make these recipes, I should be able to as well! I've baked two things from it already, but admittedly, I did go straight to the baking section. Here I've got classic Anzac biscuits as well as chocolate and carrot cupcakes (which I've supersized!)

This is a beautiful cookbook - fully illustrated with step by step instructions - and the recipes are much more sophisticated than I expected, given that they were tested by children. We eat a lot of vegetarian meals, and I love pasta, and Fresh hits the spot in both of these areas. There are over 120 recipes to enjoy here, from one of Australia's most loved and respected cooks, and most of them look like they will be fairly quick to make. I don't mind spending a while on baking since it lasts a few days, but half an hour is as long as I want to spend making a meal... I mean, I could be reading!

The stack of books here are my effort at a #dinnerpartystack, which @hookmeabook did a fabulous job of. The idea is that you are meant to come up with an entree, main and dessert through book titles... and I failed miserably! It kind of seems fitting that I've achieved a dessert buffet instead, as that's my favourite thing to eat, and I'd definitely go to a dinner party featuring just dessert! I've found ice cream, custard, chocolate and a range of fruit - and I know I've got a cake book, but it's currently hiding...Tagging a few friends to see if they can do better than me!

Hi, folks! There was the most gorgeous sunrise biking to work today, not a bad way to start the day! I haven't done a #lastnownext for a while, so here goes. Tell me what your last, now or next read is!

Last: Warrior Girl Unearthed
Did you read The Firekeeper's Daughter? I did, and I really enjoyed it - so much more than I expected to. Reading Warrior Girl Unearthed was exactly the same experience. It was such an enjoyable, immersive and fascinating read, and once again, I felt like I learnt so much about the Native American culture. I was absolutely horrified to learn about what a process it is to reclaim and repatriate ancestral remains, and also how awful the statistics are regarding how many indigenous women go missing. This is heavy, sobering stuff, but it's written in such an accessible style that it flows beautifully. I loved our MC, Perry - such a passionate and strong heroine, mature in some ways, but still very much a reckless teen in other ways. I wholeheartedly recommend this for both teens and adults, and for me, it might even had the edge on The Firekeeper's Daughter. It's also lovely that we get some of the same characters popping up again, which I always enjoy. I think it can be tough to write a book about a subject like this and still make it a page-turner, but I reckon Boulley got it just right here.

Now: Gwen and Art are not in Love
Isn't this a fun cover? I was attracted to this one because of the Arthurian setting, and it's also the perfect Pride Month read. I loved the idea of an arranged marriage destined to fail, because Art likes boys, and Gwen likes girls. I'm only about 100 pages into this one, and while I can see that teens are going to go crazy for this book, as evidenced by the Goodreads rating, it's a bit too much of a YA rom-com for me. I think I was expecting more Arthurian detail, plus at this stage, Art is a bit of a dick!

Next: Sparrow?
I'm pondering Sparrow next, which has the most stunning cover! It's a historical novel set in Rome, and while it hasn't immediately grabbed me on reading the first few pages, @hook.me.a.book loved it, so that's making me keener. I think I'll just need to be in the right mood!

The wonderful @bookaddicted_soul tagged me in the Spill the Tea Challenge. So here is my take.

▫️A book that TAUGHT me something:
Convenience Store Woman - changed how I view other people. We tend to look at people leading lives that are very different from our idea of "a happy life" and think "what a sad life. They are not living. They are wasting their lives...". But they might be doing exactly what they want to be doing. Happiness is subjective.

▫️A book I didn't want to END:
The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - the most charming book ever!
If We Were Villains - I thought this would be an okay book right until the ending. The ending just 😶 and then it ended! And we're all left with the worst hangover.

▫️An AUTHOR I can't get enough of: Jane Austen, Arthur Conan Doyle and Agatha Christie. I haven't read everything by Christie yet but I am not looking forward to that day.

Comment your answers below. I would especially like to know your answer for Q.2.

I've seen this tag around a lot and I'm not sure who has and hasn't done it. If I've tagged you, no pressure, and if you see this post, consider yourself tagged!
