Gather: Community Threads has been quietly gaining momentum over the past few months with each participant finishing their individual embroidered panel that will soon become part of our collective tablecloth. Rather than asking participants to represent the four seasons literally, I invited them to respond to the sensory experience of each one. Summer became the thickness and weight of warm air, overgrowth and entanglement, long stretches of light, the sounds of summer, and heat as a sensory pattern. Autumns prompts was the shift from warmth to coolness on your skin, the scent of damp earth and leaf litter, long shadows and earlier evenings, the rhythm of falling leaves, and the quiet transition between abundance and rest. The prompts were designed to encourage observation, memory and feeling, allowing every participant to interpret their season in a way that felt personal and intuitive.

At the heart of the composition sits the oak tree, chosen as our central motif because it is often referred to as the host of the most, supporting more biodiversity than any other native tree in Ireland. Woven throughout the embroidery are native birds, insects, moths, butterflies, fungi, lichens and plants associated with the oak, quietly hidden amongst the stitching as small discoveries waiting to be found. While each panel has its own distinctive identity, together they create something far greater than the sum of their parts.

I’m now in the final stages of sewing the individual panels together into one finished textile. In August we’ll gather around a shared table to celebrate the work, enjoy a communal meal, and reflect on everything that has been learned, made and shared between us over the past nine months.

I can’t wait to share the finished piece with you all.

We spent the afternoon ‘Slow Stitching’ with the beautiful Morag Donald @creatinghealing and wow, we are glad that we did!

So what’s ‘Slow Stitching’? It’s basically doodling with thread!

With no plan and no finished product in mind it’s nothing like the creative process for creating wedding flowers which is refreshing to say the least. Morag had lots of different textiles and materials for us to use, various different threads and a self-threading needle (yeh, we didn’t know such a thing existed before today either!) and the peace to just create something; anything we wanted.

It was so nice to be able to slip into a genuine state of mindfulness, and to create something that wasn’t ever going to be critiqued for its beauty (as this is never the case in our day-job!).

We both left feeling like our batteries had been recharged and inspired in all sorts of ways.

Perhaps a ‘non-flower’ creative day should be on the calendar every month!?

Thanks as always Morag for inviting us into your world and for sharing your art. We think you’re awesome x
