Ego often gets treated as something negative.
But if you’re an artist or designer, some level of ego is inevitable, you’re putting your ideas into the world.
The real skill is learning when ego is serving you and when it’s getting in the way.
Trust your instincts. Back your perspective. But stay open.
Read that article that doesn’t interest you. Listen to different viewpoints. You might be surprised what shifts.
Strong instincts and curiosity can exist at the same time.
Self-awareness is where the balance lives.

I touched on this topic with the @creative.or.dead podcast. Listen to the full ep wherever you get your pods. #creativeordead #tysymonds #creativity

We live with constant information coming at us.
Articles. Feeds. Opinions. Analysis.
At some point the most important thing you can do is step back and empty the mind.
Let the noise fall away and allow the ideas that actually matter to stay.
If your foundations are strong — your experience, your values, your craft — you can trust that the rest will fill in over time.
Information is everywhere.
Clarity usually comes from space. I touched on this topic with the @creative.or.dead podcast. Listen to the full ep wherever you get your pods. #creativeordead #tysymonds #creativity

Nature doesn’t waste, but it does create excess.
In natural systems, excess has purpose. It feeds something else. It returns to the cycle. It regenerates.
In our systems, excess often becomes waste. But maybe the problem isn’t excess itself, maybe it’s that we haven’t designed the system that absorbs it.
Upstream design matters. Reduction matters. But so does asking: if this becomes surplus, what does it feed?
Excess without a loop becomes waste.
Excess within a system becomes renewal.
I touched on this topic with the @creativeordead podcast. Listen to the full ep wherever you get your pods.

A couple of highlights:
@bremperera’s Bollinger bar
@riveroshan at @gallerysallydancuthbert (biased because we just had Golnar Roshan on @creative.or.dead and she’s so amazing, the work speaks for itself)
@_jordanfleming and @studioceravolo’s lights
The crazy rocking chair and titanium mirror by @adamcornishdesign
The mushy’s by @volkerhaug
@ruth_o.leary at @marycherrycontemporary

As the year wraps up, so does my time as CreativeMornings Melbourne host 💛

1.5 years of early mornings with this community — incredible speakers, thoughtful conversations, familiar and new faces each month. It’s been such a fun ride, and I have a few thank yous to share.

To our talented speakers who generously volunteer their time — thank you for sharing your stories with us.
To the brilliant CM crew (Mark, Penny, Holly, Casey, Cat & Lewis) who show up all year round — I’m so grateful for you.
And to our CreativeMornings audience — thank you for getting up early, showing up with curiosity, for the warm hugs, excellent style, laughs and chats, and for bringing your people (and pups) along to join the fun!

I took this role on because of my love of programming and the Melbourne creative community. What stayed with me most was people’s generosity — the energy in the room, and how it carries on afterwards.

Thank you to the many small businesses who supported us, especially @tomsplbrunswick, @marketlane, @offlinesupplyco, @stateofplay_studio, @mydailybusiness_, @blue.tree.studios, @foliolio and @twopence.digital.

Huge thank you to Tina and the team at CM HQ. And a personal thanks to @samanthacurcio, @tamara.scheiwe, @theideasbodega, @marieluises, @emholds, Jo McAlpine and to all my gorgeous mates who leant a hand (or ear) at various times.

CM takes a village — and you’re all part of it.
Thank you 🙏

If hosting sounds like your jam and you’d like to run the Melbourne chapter, email us at melbourne@creativemornings.com with any questions and I can pass your details on to CM HQ.

ℂ𝕣𝕖𝕒𝕥𝕚𝕧𝕖 𝕠𝕣 𝔻𝕖𝕒𝕕 | Throwback to recording my episode of @creative.or.dead — not my first podcast, but hands down my favourite so far.

The theme really hit home. I’ve always found creativity outside the usual paths — not just in art, but in how we think, work, build, solve, adapt. The kind of creativity that hides in systems, in strategy, in seeing a different way through. So getting to talk about that in depth was a rare and energising experience.

David @pleasureprojects and Aleesha @aleeshacallahan are the kind of hosts you hope for — smart, generous and thoughtful. They asked questions that opened doors instead of closing them, and brought a tone that felt grounded but expansive. The kind of people you could talk with for hours — and we did. The conversation flowed from work to art to family to philosophy, with plenty of laughs and moments of unexpected insight along the way.

It left me feeling more connected, more curious, and more certain than ever that creative isn’t a job title — it’s a way of being in the world.

Give it a listen and let me know what you think!

IN A ROOM WITH LUKE ELLIOT

In a Room is a conversation series where we ask our friends to share their favourite domestic spaces. For this edition, we’re joined by musician, instrument repairer, and @hiss.melbourne founder Luke Elliot.

Whether he’s building recording devices from scratch or turning a living room into a dancefloor, Luke is someone who lives deeply in sound. Based in Melbourne, he’s the founder of HISS — a community-led recording platform built on curiosity, field recordings, and a love of beautifully strange audio. The latest release from HISS is Pitchi, a portable device that lets you record and play back and modify short messages — like an audio time capsule for the everyday. The latest edition features original artwork by none other than @ghostpatrol, who readers may recognise from his own IN A ROOM feature.

In this edition, Luke reflects on the rooms that shaped him — from his grandfather’s shed to a dream conversation pit sunk deep into a modernist icon. He shares the role lighting plays in his creative mood, what poor acoustics reveal about priorities, and why he’s obsessed with the subtle details that make a space feel considered.
