Over the last few weeks, Martin and I have been painting in this very dark underpass under the A9. 25 metres, feet to head — this is one of two figures lying the full length of the wall.

Inspired by Stranger Things, the young people we worked with used the idea of the Upside Down as a parallel for what it’s like being young in a world built by adults. The design carries that across two walls, two figures, each spanning the full 25 metres. This one is grounded in the real world — calm, reflective, surrounded by nature, on a gradient running green through to red, up onto the ceiling. Its counterpart, on the opposite wall, is the mirror world: stranger, upside down, unsettled, its own gradient fading grey through to an intense red. That’s for the next post.

Young people came up with the concept and steered the design from the start, and over 30 of them helped paint it. Workshops began about a year ago; the painting’s been the last few weeks — in a tunnel with its own weather system, condensation problems from the concrete’s thermal mass that neither of us had seen before.

Over the last few weeks martin and I have been creating a mural under the A9 with @creativecatalystscotland and the young people of Auchterarder. Can’t wait to share more about it- has been both really fun and an unexpected challenge, and we love a challenge. In the meantime here is a detail we’ve been working on #mural #publicart #auchterarder #spraypaint #portrait
