I can’t believe it’s already been two weeks since the Black British Book Festival (@bbbookfestival). It was an honour to share the day with you all!

It was extra special taking my mentee Ben (@afro.clouds) with me, and it felt fitting to wear a t-shirt to remember my mentor, Benjamin Zephaniah (@officialbenjaminzephaniah) who helped me publish my first book!

🦖 🧡 Kid Rex to the Rescue written by Mayo Agard-Olubo, illustrated by Diane Ewen and published by Hodder Children’s Books 🧡 🦖

@mayo.ao.writer @creativedewen @the_rebel_reading_society @hodderfiction

🦖 What an amazing debut picture book, which is bursting with vibrancy, is rich in imagination and is an ingenious way to get your kid to tidy their bedroom.

🧡 No mission is too big for this dino-loving hero, as he dons his super cool cape, secures his amazing dino mask and equips himself with the latest gadgets: his dino grabber.

🦖Max, aka Kid Rex, is tasked by Dino Dad with his biggest mission yet… there is an evil King Dust Bunny on the loose and Kid Rex needs all his skills to KAPOW it back to the vacuum cleaner, where is belongs. With toys lost and strewn all over the place, can this young hero save the day and restore order?

🧡 Definitely need more awesome adventures from Kid Rex and Dino Dad! Great to meet you Mayo and thanks for signing my book. 🦖

It was my absolute pleasure to bring Kid Rex To The Rescue to the @bbbookfestival alongside my fantastic illustrator @creativedewen who brought a real life (handmade!) King Dust Bunny with her!!

It felt so important to be at an event where Black Readers turned up in their numbers and showed how much hunger there is for our stories especially at a time when data seems to show representation in publishing is sliding backwards.

Hope to be back again soon #BBBF26

🖤 Black History Month is a chance to make space for Black voices, stories, histories and experiences.

It is a time to discover books that help children see themselves, their communities and the world around them.

We’re celebrating the diversity of Black stories this October, while also reminding ourselves that representation matters beyond October.

The more diverse our bookshelves, the more perspectives, experiences and stories we make room for.

There are so many Black British picture book authors I wanted to include in this post, and 18 still didn’t feel like enough. 📚

For Black History Month, I wanted to put the spotlight on some of the authors behind the picture books we read, recommend and add to our shelves. Some have been writing for decades, some are newer to picture books, and some you might already know from completely different areas of children’s publishing.

This is definitely not an exhaustive list. I had a limited number of slides and there were more authors I wanted to include, so think of this as a starting point rather than a definitive list.

And while I’m sharing this during Black History Month, these are authors to read, recommend and support all year round.

A little side note, I’ll be doing a separate post for Black British illustrators too, because there are so many incredible illustrators bringing these stories and characters to life, and they deserve their own spotlight. 🎨

How many of these authors did you already know? And who would you add to the list? Drop their name in the comments so we can all discover more Black British picture book authors. ❤️

Part 2: Kid Rex to the Rescue by @mayo.ao.writer and @creativedewen

This should 💯% be in supermarkets everywhere! Accessible and exciting for every child (especially those that love dinosaurs and superheroes!). A perfect way to build empathy and understanding between children and their parents; and just SO. MUCH. FUN! 🎉

I'm making some posts about PHENOMENAL picture books that happen to feature young black protagonists.
