I cancelled two patients today to go to an art class.

I need you to understand how terrifying that was for me.

I grew up poor. I started working at 14. I have never, not once in my adult life, felt like it was okay to just... stop. To take up space. To do something just because I wanted to. The fear underneath it isn’t just about money it’s this deep belief that if I’m not working, the whole world falls apart. That choosing myself is the same as letting everyone else down.

But my friend Kelly runs a drawing class on Thursday mornings and I have been wanting to go for months. And today I did it.

And it was one of the most healing things I’ve done in a long time.

Here’s what I didn’t expect — a drawing class is surprisingly like a therapy session. When I got stuck on a shading line and started spiralling into “I’m doing this wrong, I’m failing,” Kelly had us work through what was coming up. Why we were feeling it. What story we were telling ourselves about the imperfect line.

This is what healing actually looks like. Not the big dramatic moments. This.

Sitting with the discomfort. Doing it anyway. Finding joy in something again for the first time in a long time.

If you’re in survival mode, there’s no room for joy. That’s not a character flaw — that’s just what survival requires. But when you start to heal, joy starts to come back. And sometimes you have to do the terrifying thing to find it.

Parallel play isn’t just for toddlers — adults do it too, and it’s quietly powerful.

It’s that comforting rhythm of being together but doing your own thing: two friends reading on the couch, partners crafting side‑by‑side, a group working on separate projects in the same room. No pressure to perform, entertain, or fill the silence. Just shared presence.

For adults, parallel play can:

- Reduce social fatigue while still offering connection
- Build trust through gentle, low‑demand companionship
- Create space for creativity and focus
- Strengthen relationships without forcing conversation

In a world that often glorifies constant interaction, parallel play gives us permission to simply coexist — warmly, peacefully, and with ease. It’s community without overwhelm, and sometimes that’s exactly what we need.

#creativityhood now has adults social craft group, every Tuesday from 6pm-9pm.
Bring your craft project along and parallel play with other crafters.
Enjoy a cup of tea or cool beverage and a treat. Chat to others or simply sit back, listen to the tunes and complete your craft.

Shout out to all the teachers building our next generation’s visionaries.

For a long time, creativity was positioned as something secondary, a supplement to “real” learning. A soft skill. An extra.

But the future has a way of revealing what truly matters. As automation expands and information becomes limitless,
the value is no longer in what can be replicated—
but in what can be imagined.

Creative thinking, problem solving, the ability to sit inside uncertainty and still make something meaningful—
these are now recognised as essential, not optional.

And this is the quiet work happening in art rooms every day.

Not just teaching technique, but teaching perception, confidence and original thought.

This is not just enrichment.
This is infrastructure for the future.

15 minutes to be creative a day is doing wonders for my nervous system. Last week my sister and I went and got me a little art set. Some watercolours, acrylics, a nice book and some pastels. Simple and compact.

Since then my sister @creativityhood has been giving me daily creation prompts. Sometimes I find myself doing these at night time once the girls are in bed or I even stole 15 minutes this morning and Billie got so curious about what I was doing 🎨

Such a reminder that it doesn’t need to be perfect, it doesn’t need to be huge, it doesn’t need to be sellable. You just need to put something to paper.

Being creative, doing art, creating.

I bought myself the most beautiful easel for my birthday last week and am starting a 30 day create challenge with my sister and I honestly feel so inspired to create for me 🎨

I’ll share here as I go!
